Help on cooling level
Hi,
I need some help regarding the cooling level of the car F48 18d, 2016. I observed that the coolant expansion tank is almost empty. I inserted a stick and I appreciate there are maximum 50 ml of coolant left in the tank. Surprisingly there is no indication on the iDrive or on the instrument cluster. I tried to search where is located the coolant level sensor, but I haven't found the answer. It seems like that there is not such a sensor on the car. Moreover, the coolant expansion tank does not have any electrical connector on it. How is this possible? Does anyone know where is this sensor located? Or how this car measure the coolant level? Edited: I checked also a lot of information on newTIS related to the cooling system, but I haven't found anything about a cooling level sensor. It's is missing also from the electrical wiring. It's really becoming strange how come that this car cannot warn the driver that such an important fluid is below the minimum level !!! 🤔😡 It's warning me about everything else, even the tire pressure, but not about the cooling level! I suggest to BMW to show a reminder on the iDrive screen, everytime the car is starting, like "Hey driver! Get down on the car first and give an eye check of the coolant level... could be low." Any ideea about this (possibly-non-existent) cooling level indicator? Or how this car check it? Looking forward for your help, Regards, Stefan Last edited by StefanJ; 07-05-2020 at 03:28 PM.. |

I don't know if there is a sensor. My F48 seemed to run fine until it suddenly started running hot, only to find there was a leak in the water pump. Received no 'low coolant' indicator, just the engine temp one.
I'm sure some one with more knowledge can chime in. |

On my 2018 X1 18i (1.5ltr petrol engine) the coolant level is visible by taking off (unscrewing) the coolant expansion tank lid and, looking in through the opening, there is a level indicator. Bit of a fiddle not being able to view through the side of the tank and, of course, you have to wait until the coolant is no longer hot in order to avoid possible scalding.
Additional Info: The amount required to fill from the Min to Max mark appears to be fairly small, although that may differ from one engine type to another. Last edited by oakey46; 07-06-2020 at 06:08 PM.. Reason: Additional Info Added |

And for such an expensive car it is not acceptable to force the owner to manually check the coolant level from time to time. This is a 2016 generation car ! |

Have you had the EGR valve cooling system checked, there is a BMW recall on it apparently it's possible for it to crack and leak coolant into the exhaust system which I'm told can cause a 🔥?

Hi guys,
I'm back with the conclusion. So, there is no coolant level sensor on X1... And my problem was the EGR cooler. Thanks to BMW dealer in my city, they changed this part for free, even if my car it's out of the warranty. It seems that many diesel BMW models suffer from this problem. |
