BMW Navigation Map Update to EUROPE Way 2021-1

Available now via the BMW Download Manager app, on Mac OS or Windows, is version EUROPE Way 2021-1.
This is quite surprising after the previous update (EUROPE Way 2020-4) that was released as recently as late November 2020!
A 16GB USB dongle may no longer be sufficient to transfer the update into your X1. This size dongle has always worked for me after formatting as indicated in the app, but I'm now getting a message, after formatting the disk, to say that I need min 15.54gb free space whereas the USB dongle only has 15.52gb space. On further investigation, it does appear that a 64GB USB Dongle will work (as should a 32GB size) because the transfer from the download has completed and now has to be installed in the car.
Regardless of the USB dongle size, this version does NOT work for X1 drivers in North America but, as in the past, is ONLY for UK and Europe X1s with EUROPE Way mapping.
If you do not have it already, the BMWDownload Manager App can be accessed by signing in to your BMW ConnectedDrive account and go to 'Remote Cockpit' then 'Control'. The Map Update link for the App is then towards the lower part of the page. You should not need to do this stage if you already have the App on your Mac/PC. So far as I am aware, there is no link to download this via iOS to iPhone or iPad and it can only be actioned via a laptop/desktop Mac or PC.

Last edited by oakey46; 01-06-2021 at 11:54 AM.. Reason: Updated because 16GB USB dongle no longer appears to be of sufficient size.

I had similar issues - it would not allow me to download onto a 32GB USB drive, however when I extracted the zip file and then transferred everything over it did work!

Thanks for the update.
I've just had a look at the file sizes on the 64GB USB Dongle on my iMac and it shows the extracted map update files have used 15.62gb of the available space which, presumably, is why it wouldn't work with the previous 16GB USB dongle. Interestingly, although its a 64GB dongle, the overall usable capacity is only 61.5GB and I assume the remaining 2.5gb will be the USB system files. I'll try it in the car tomorrow.

You are right, this release came pretty quickly after the last update and Europe has grown too big for 16gb dongle. I thought it might be useful to remind all those forum members who just rely on OTA (automatic over the air) updates that they will only be getting one region updated , for example U.K & Eire, or Germany and not the whole European mapping. You can select which region is updated OTA via connected drive (approx 10), otherwise the default will be country of purchase. If owners want all the region mapping updated they will have to use download and install via usb. I suggest it especially important to do a full usb update at least once a year or if your free update period is due to end. Once the gap between full and a region gets too long, I understand OTA can stop updating. For U.S and Canada owners I understand just OTA is available but would appreciate clarification and correction if whole of North America can be downloaded and installed via usb.

I can confirm for Canada (and likely for U.S.) that maps are updated OTA if you have subscribed to (i.e., paid for) the service. My understanding is that these are partial "delta" updates applied on top of the full maps that are already installed. This is probably because full maps would use a lot of data (GB's) that would exceed the basic LTE data plan. BMW here does not offer downloading to and installing from USB drive.

In my case, I purchased, downloaded and installed the full 2019-1 North America Way maps from an online vendor in 2019. OTA has since been updating them, so I am now at 2020-4. These updates are only for Canada and Alaska, not including the rest of U.S. and Mexico.

Although I seldom drive to U.S., I intend to purchase the full 2021 North America Way maps (and FSC if necessary) online to bring everything up-to-date.

Mine took some 10-15 minutes.
I have been using a 32GB Lexar Usb 3.0 stick.
This time I had to erase all existing data in it before being able to extract there form my hard drive where I downloaded it in the first place.

Quite surprised with so many updates !

Just done mine. One important lesson learned. In the first instance I used a 128 GB ssd card ( formatted in NTFS) in a usb adaptor. After unzipping the file and inserting in the USB port in the car the update started. However when the progress reached 24% I received an error and a prompt on I-drive to change USB since current media is not supported. The navigation remained in "Loading " screen . No map visible. Then I reformatted in FAT 32 and tried again. Same result. As a last resort I changed tactic, bought a 32GB USB SanDisk 3.0 and installed again the map update on . This time all went seamless and the map is now update.

I guess the car recognised in the first instance that I don't have a pure USB inserted. Therefore, my advise is use a 32 GB USB as recommended to avoid any hassle .

I shared this just in case someone will face the same situation.

Wishing you success with update.

Just a point to mention with regard to installing the EUROPE Way 2021-1 update in your X1.
If you find that the install process is quite quick, even though when you go into Navigation settings and check the version it will show you have the 2021-1 'edition', this may not reveal the true picture, even if you are able to use the Navigation facility.
I found that if I either quit the navigation, or pressed OK when the first install screen came up after plugging in your USB dongle, the full update has not been applied.
To check that, I reinstalled the dongle and turned on the ignition only to find that the update was only around 40% complete. By NOT touching any of the Nav buttons, OR the OK note on screen to say the update was progressing and just driving off, or sitting outside my garage with the engine running, the full update was applied and the Nav restarted itself.
To prove this, I mentioned it to a pal with an X1 and he did the same, finding the full install took a while longer whilst he was out driving, despite his having thought he'd completed the full update earlier.
So, as I say, just a point to consider for UK/EU X1 drivers.

I faced the exact same issue. my update finished in a moment and got no clue what happened. Checked the map version and it was already 2021-1.
I was pretty sure something is not right and then came across your suggestion.
I would give it another try.

Just a question, at what point in time the system will ask for FSC code? I do not have the official BMW downloaded map and when tried for the 1st time, it did not ask for any FSC. Now I know that the update was not successful and before giving it one more try, want to make sure I do not mess things up.
Will it ever ask for FSC or not? If yes then when and what if I do not have the right code?

Going back to my previous F25 X3 xDrive30d M Sport, the FSC code will be asked for as soon as you put the USB into the car and start the update. If it is not needed, it will not be asked for.
See attachment for contents of the USB drive.
Worthy of note, if you put the extracted contents onto a USB 3, it only takes about 25 minutes to do the car update.
To check for the progress of the update, go into the iDrive and check the Map version number. It will give you a percentage bar. You can stop and start this as often as you wish. A message is displayed to this effect. Did not see it? Then you missed it.

Strange, the system did not ask for FSC and started loading the file. When it was about 3-4%, I came out of that page to do some other things on iDrive. In my folder structure as well I do not have the FSC folder.
When I went to the version, I did not see any progress bar either. Only the latest version which is 2021-1. And the whole thing took about 3-5 mins or so. Which makes me worried
So if the system did not ask for FSC, it will not ask after the complete update? is there a chance it will ask once the idrive reboots or maybe next time when I start the car?

Did you use the download manager and follow the instructions to extract the contents to USB drive?

Post a screen dump of your map version. Perhaps others including myself may be able to help!

1st one is for 2021-1 which is not from the official BMW download
2nd one is of 2020-3 which is from the official BMW download

the 2021-1 I downloaded from the google drive of Bimmerscene
and the 2020-3 is the official BMW download.
I followed the standard process each time. Had no issue while loading 2020-3. that time too it did not ask for the FSC(which makes sense as it was official download)

I would be surprised if it did!
If I were you, I would leave things well alone. Looking at the last attachment screenshot shows you are good to go. Perhaps BMW GE has a different purchase policy on map updates to what BMW UK does.
It could be that when this car was purchased maps for a very long specified duration did not need a FSC code.

Seems like you are right about the FSC code, at least I want to believe what you are saying
Well to be double sure, I again inserted the USB and got the below message. looks like the update went fine.
Thanks for the wise suggestion. I will leave this as it is.
I will cross-check at the time of 2021-2 updates.

Thanks for your help.
