EGR valve replace

Hi everyone

Has anyone replaced their EGR valve on their X1 (2016)?

After a few 'powertrain' errors on the dashboard that were related to EGR valve issues, I decided to take it out and give it a clean. Alas, no more errors for 6 months until today. Rather than cleaning it again I'm going to replace it with a new valve - so hopefully it will last longer than 6 months!

I'm wondering if I need to set the valve into 'service mode' before replacing the new one (this mode contracts the valve by 20% allowing insertion) Now I didn't have to do this when I cleaned the old valve - I just put it back in but I've read a new one would break if I did this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.

dswalker6 I recently got drivetrain error and jerking at low speed from 1st to 2nd and reverse gear. Looking at other threads also suspect EGR valve fault. does your car have similar symptoms?

Yes, you need to put it into installation mode using a special function on ISTA. Otherwise, you will break the internal plastic pieces and need to buy a new one.

Take a look at this video:

Yes, exactly the same symptoms. The jerking and juddering got worse over time and then eventually the powertrain warning error came up. After checking the diagnostics it said 'EGR valve stuck open' or 'EGR valve stuck closed'

Brill, thank you. I'll need to get the ITSA software then.

Do you know where I can download this from?

Just a thought, but have you checked if your car us subject to the new BMW recall action? Our car is booked in and I was advised that it is for a new EGR cooler. Reading on other forums, this is a new item and does not fit the existing EGR valve, so apparently this gets replaced as well.

Might be worth a check before going to the time and expense of fitting the item yourself:

Hope this may help

Yes, search the forum, and you will find the links. There's even a VM (virtual machine) ready to use on any OS (you will need VMWare Fusion or similar to run it).

Hi all, the car has had it's EGR cooler replaced when it was recalled, but unfortunately the EGR valve needs replacing.
I've downloaded the ISTA software so I can set the EGR valve to 'service mode' but couldn't get it working, I'm getting an error message "failed to start ISTA, please make sure your ISTA configuration is valid'
Ive paid for the software too, not happy.

Got it from Bimmer Diagnostics, I've emailed them for help but not reply yet.

your install is not correct. what version did they have you download? no reason to pay for it, it’s free to download.

I use this version: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=18

It's ISTA v4.27.31 on a VM.

Hi guys,
has anyone been able to sucessfully install a non genuine ebay egr valve?

After using ista to get the valve into service mode, it retracts to 30%
Now once i seat the new valve and screw it on, it starts to retract the valve, close to 50%, depending on how much i tighten it.

I'm thinking that its either the wrong size valve, or there is too much carbon buildup that its causing the valve to not fit?
Or do i just need to keep re adjusting/re-seating the valve until it sits flush?

by the way this is the replacement non genuine valve i purchased.

It appears you could just remove the motor from the EGR assembly and reattach the motor once the assembly was secured to the engine. Is this possible? I'm just thinking like when I've done the rear brakes on this thing. I just pull the motor and retract the brake piston to wherever I want it.

Hello everyone. I am considering changing my EGR valve, but I do not have ISTA. I would like to know if BimmerLink can control the valve. Thank you in advance for your help.
