Keep in mind that this is a Diesel (and likely only for the European market).
Some perspective: The current 318D puts out 143HP. From what I see, 70% of the 3-series in Europe are low-output 4 cyl gas and diesel engines. Gas is $7.5 per gallon here! Current 318d Details: http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesand...calSpec&isPGA= Review of current 318D: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/...-318d-ES-auto/ My thoughts: BMW should use this new 3CYL D in a in a "Green" Mini. Americans would consider such an option as a second car or for commuting (60+ MPG, anyone?). Last edited by roundle; 01-08-2011 at 03:46 AM.. |

I will prefer 150 hp from a 3-cylinder than a 4 cylinder. Less weight, better milage and the sound of a 3 cylinder is awesome compared to lame sound of a 4-cylinder.

IMO breadth of market and innovative technologies are key to BMW's future success in the USA market.
A 3-series with >50mpg would be an excellent marketing point. The Volt & Leaf attract interest that sells the other models.

Actually I did :-) The vibrations didnt bother me, but loved the sound of the engine, sound like a real machine! Traded in my Skoda Roomster for my F11. The car was very practical city-car. Incredibly enough the milage of the 520d is better than this 3 cylinder Tdi. Imagine how the 1-and 3 series will be with a BMW 3-cylinder engine. |

If it is sold in the US, it should be sold at a significant discount over the current 328. BMW's pricing has gotten a little ridiculous as of recently.
The fact that you could spec up about a 70k non-M 3er is just staggering. |

Some American's crack me up, they often forget that e90's and e46's had 4-cylinder power in other countries this whole time. e36's had 4cyl's in the US...
Just because this UK mag suspects the F30 will get the 3cyl, doesn't mean it will make it to the US. But what if it does? If its efficient and powerful, I say go for it! I won't buy one, but those "buyers" that are only buying the roundel (leasing) will probably gobble them right up...

Best looking render yet, I love it
US base engine will def be a turbo 4...3 cylinder turbo putting out 150 isn't enough to compete with the C-Class |

You do realize that it's only one engine option right? I don't think BMW is about to give up on 300+ HP 3ers.

i dont think it will get a 3 cylinder engine on a heavy 3er, maybe the FWD yeah but definitely not on the 3er, too much vibrations from the engine plus its a heavy car lol. just imagine yourself in a traffic jam and then feel the vibrationsssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. turboed 4 i guess
