Waiting for your car

What is the longest or most difficult wait you've had for either a new car, performance upgrade etc?

I've got a client who has about 4 weeks left on his electric ferrari he is taking delivery of and I could not imagine what the anticipation level must feel like.

So what's it been like for you?

Not a new car but when I purchased my motorcycle in early March of 2020, I had to wait for the title to come in late July before I could even get tags for it. Started getting buyers remorse because of the wait. Was well worth it in the end.

Currently waiting on my allocation for the new M2. On two waiting lists at local dealers, #9 on one, and #10 on the other. Jumped up a few spots in each list after last month's allocation. Could be 3 months, or could be a year or more depending on the ongoing allocations. This is my first experience ordering a new car and waiting for production.

Last year when I bought a new summer wheels set my car was in the shop for a couple days. The day I picked it up it was snowing and the next couple weeks was cold and more snow. Having the new wheels and having to wait 2 to 3 weeks to go and drive was torturous.

Start of 2011 after a year of debating whether to get a 6spd V10 M5 or M6, finally landed on the M5, 3yr old lease returns a plenty but they went fast, had to wait until divorce was finalized to pull the trigger, flew to FL to pick one up in June. Unique bad conditions, totaled it into a tree, 6 weeks for insurance to payout, picked up its replacement 2 weeks later in OH. Still have the car to this day. The 1.5yr process wasn't so bad, crashing it I took the loss better than expected, but was so addicted to the car after a few weeks the 6 week insurance ordeal was painful to get the next one.

Having my 1st M4 vert shipped sight unseen from CA to RI was a stressful 8-9 days waiting for it to show up.

I don't have the patience for that. Longest I've waited for a car was the Model 3 which I ordered online while in NC. The car pretty much stays in FL so I had no real need for it at that time. I think it took maybe 2-3 months. However since I wasn't even in FL and I had already owned one previously I didn't have that anticipation.

However my friend has been waiting for a C8 for like 2 years or more. He says it's because he refuses to pay over MSRP so he keeps getting bumped back. Dunno. I wouldn't even get on a list like that.

3 months for Collision damage on my E46 back in the day. I was not a manager at that point and my boss said employees come last.
I was buying my first house and could not touch anything on my credit so I had to fix the car which should have been totaled but it was a fun car so I wasn't too upset to keep it.

Sighhhhhhh

Took this beautiful machine in for a routine oil change after riding it from MD to NY. Rode it to the service center, dropped it off and grabbed breakfast for wah was supposed to be a 2-3 hour wait before expecting to ride it back to my APT.
After about an hour, got a call from the service center saying they found foreign debris in the oil filter and the bike is not rideable until further notice / diagnosis. Expected wait time is 2 weeks.
Called them after waiting 3 weeks. They suspect severe engine damage and recommend engine rebuild or swap out, but diagnosis is incomplete (after 3 weeks )
Called them back another 2 weeks later to hear the same recommendation to buy a new engine, rebuilding the organic engine is not cost effective.
After waiting almost 2 months to ride my bike after what was supposed to be a simple oil change, I was never able to enjoy this work of art, ever again. May she R.I.P.
The next week, placed an order of a brand new S1KRR. Due to Covid and back orders, had to wait 10 weeks until I had the keys in hand. Very frustrating riding season back in 2021.

Did Ducati make you whole or say you were responsible for the failure?

Unfortunately, no. I had to part it out to recoup some of the money I spent when I bought it used from a private party. Warranty was expired.
I rode the he'll out of that thing up and down the I-95 for a little over two years before having to let her go.

Not a car but an offroad bike, I put in a deposit in December and whne it got pushed to end of Feb at the end of Jan I walked into a Ducati dealership and bought the Desert Sled on the floor. Realistically Im probably doing 80/20 street/dirt anyway so it makes sense.

If I get carried away I kind of want an electric dirt bike anyway.

The ducati story seems suspect, dont those use the secondary prefilter like the previous models? If so did they mean that? If so what did they say the object was? If its caught in the filter ITS NOT A PROBLEM in itself.

Did they say what the diag was that told them severe damage?

Took at least 2 years from the day I made an agreement with a local builder and ordered the frame until I finally got to ride it. That was somewhere back in 1999 or so.

Rode it yesterday to work . . .

Wife and I had a ball tracking our X5 production and it really increased the excitement of picking it up.

The only car I’ve ever ordered is my current car. I tracked the production, ship, etc., but it wasn’t that bad because I had a 2015 F82 in the same color and most of the same options while I waited. I did look forward to the convertible though.

Trust me, I definitely let that service center know that I believe they sabotaged my bike. Also, to this day, I still spread the word of their shady services and recommend people stay away from using them.

Tried to go thru insurance to hold them accountable, but unfortunately insurance doesn't cover mechanical damage and there was no way to prove it was mechanically sound prior to bringing it in for service, other than me riding it in the day I dropped it off.
Ultimately, I had them flatbed my bike to my place, so I can part it out.

That's the most frustrating part!! That bike had so much life left in it.
I bought it used on cycle trader from a collector in FL with only a little over 1100 miles on the ODO. Yes, less than 1200 miles on a limited production (only 500 units made), 3 year old bike.
The last time I rode it, it was at around a little less that 3k miles, IIRC. So in the two years I had it, I put about 2k miles on it.

That was my dream bike. One of the reasons I had that shady service center give me back my bricked bike was because it crossed my mind that they may have sabotaged it with the intention of convincing me to sell it to them. Well, if I couldn't ride it anymore, then no one will.

I was drooling over that thing since it first became available to the public back in 2016. So if we're getting back on topic, I waited 3 years to get one, when I finally came across one that happened to be pre-owned with low miles and significantly reduced in price.

I waited 2.5 months for my 2022 M4 Competition X-Drive to be built and delivered. It's the first car I ever custom ordered, I usually just shop what's on the lots. I was on the tracker everyday seeing the build progress. When it got on the ship, I tracked the ship across the sea, tried to find it on the webcams at the Panama Canal, then experienced anxiety as it sat at the arrival port waiting for inspection and wondering if it was part of a dreaded well known chip shortage delay at the time. Luckily it was not, and I was a happy camper when it arrived!

My 2016 BMW M3 serves as the most agonizing wait I've endured for a vehicle. I secured the allocation in June of 2015 during an allocation drought and was super fortunate to locate one at invoice. I picked the car up on October 30 and in between I tracked it obsessively online and called the 800 number hundreds of times. I got to the point where I knew their names as soon as they started talking. What's odd is I no longer have that experience. The wait no longer bothers me. I guess that's what buying a bunch of cars does to you. I patiently waited 7 months for the Porsche and about 5 for the Civic Type R and at no point was the wait difficult. You keep your head down living life and then boom, it's time to go pick up another car. It's like magic!

16 month wait from the time I ordered my Bronco until I picked it up. It sat there “built” in a parking lot for 3 months waiting for transit from Michigan to New Jersey. The lack any update from Ford made it worse.
I’m now on month 7 of a Heritage edition with no scheduled production date since the first wait sucked so much.

BMW spoiled me though, they always had up to date information through the process for all of our ordered BMWs.

6 month wait on my TRX
6 month wait on my 911

Worth the wait on both.
