X1 pads and discs. Just 37K Km?

My wife's 2018 X1 just threw a pad warning: Brake pad service due in 1800Km. I pulled a tire off front and back and sure enough there is about only 1mm of pad left and front rotors seriously worn (nice gouges and some pieces chunked out). She just has 37K Km (23K mi).

What have you X1ers been experiencing for pad and rotor life? This seems pretty low, no?

I've just hit 30,000 miles, and the service indicator says there's only around 1,200 miles left on the pads. The dealer checked them recently during an oil service and reckoned that the discs/rotors might need replacing at the same time as the pads! They are the original discs and pads, but I'm surprised and disappointed that the discs have only lasted that long. I certainly don't drive and stop the car hard.

If your car like mine is subject to coasting then that puts additional wear on the brakes due to lack of engine braking. My Tiguan had rusty rear discs because of the low mileage I do and I always thought, badly apportioned brake bias.

Yes. Pretty disappointing indeed considering how soon it needs to be done. Sadly no repair shops open due to COVID.

Based on what I see from my wifes X1, wear looks pretty well balanced. Fronts have 1mm left and rears 1.5mm. I'm not too sure on the coasting part eating pads to that degree. But thanks for your note. I'm going to try aftermarket. It cant be any worse then what was on the vehicle.

I just replaced my front pads at 34k the rotors were fine just did the pads and wear sensor. But really surprised they needed to be changed so early. Out of all the cars I’ve had over the years I have never had one need brake service before 50k at a minimum.

It's very driver dependent, my mom, bless her heart, went through brakes every 10k miles on multiple cars, all her adult life and I could never figure out why even though I had my suspicions over time.

I don’t think that’s the case here. Too many people have the same issue. More of a you get what you pay for scenario , LOL

I had to replaced my rear brake + rotor at around 32k km and front brake at 38k km. I drive in Sports mode only (with paddles) with conservative braking as I like to let it roll for as far as possible. I think the wear might be caused by the traction systems being overly active in Sports mode as the inner wheel brakes during turning to increase handling. I turn off DSC completely now, hopefully that'll help.

Replaced my rear brake pads and rotors at only 25k. Then, front at 30.8k.

No, driving style wasnt a major factor. It was mostly driven extremely conservatively in 95%+ eco pro and comfort mode only. On downhills, I dont ride the brakes at all, using minimal braking to maintain a safe distance.

I definitely think there's an issue with premature brake wear.

I hear you. Me and the missed have had a few BMWs over the years and the X1 is the quickest on wear. E46-M3, E46-330, E92-335, E90-328 - all had pads that lasted to 50K Km and rotors to 65K Km.

Rotors are done as well. Front left has some chunks missing. Grrr.

I just replaced front and rear pads and sensors yesterday , the rotors are fine , hardly any wear, the pads could have done another 5000km easily but the rear warning came on so I thought I better change both, the car is a 2016 20D Xdrive and has done 50000km since new, this is the first set of pads, I did everything myself , only took about an hour and cost AU$400 for the parts (all genuine BMW)

I tend to agree. I hope the aftermarket fairs a little better.

I changed over to summers last weekend and let my wife know she had about 1000Km left on the pads. Discs are beat to s**t as well. Brake sensor just went off yesterday. All shops are closed here in Quebec due to F'n COVID, so I'll have to order discs, pads and sensors and do it myself over a weekend. I'm not sure I'll buy BMW this time.

Went with Akebono pads on front and OEM on rear. For front, there's much less dusting and performance feels the same as the original pads.

If you're gonna DIY, front brakes are like any other brake job. But, rear have electronic parking brake that will require either an advanced scan tool or a manual windback to put it in service mode.

Thats right. I forgot about the rear e-Brake. Thanks for the reminder.

Manual windback is really easy, 2 bolts and the motor comes off then use a 10mm spanner to wind it back

Same here, 45.000 km. Front pads and discs and rear pads needed replacement.

Wrote a mail to BMW about this, they just said these parts wear fast due to a lot of city driving or pulling a trailer. I dont own a trailer and only drive highway.

Next answer was; nothing to do about it

My old F30 used a set of pads every 45k km and a set of discs every 90k so the distance for the pads seems OK to me.

The coasting feature of the X1 is definitely adding extra wear to the brake pads/discs because you need to brake the car yourself. I could also imagine that the adaptive cruise control also adds some if you drive a lot in dense traffic.

The X1 also comes with something called “Performance Control” (https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1526189) that uses the brake to control cornering even though the car is no were near its limits. Then there is the fact that the X1 is a FWD based/biased platform with no real LSD. So when there is wheel slip it uses the brakes to distribute the left/right output. Also when the car understeers the brakes are used to get it back in control.

Also compared to the F30 the discs are smaller yet the car is heavier. So they will wear out faster. Then again they are also cheaper.

My pads wore out and a couple rotors got warped around 23k miles. Dealer replaced them no charge and acknowledged that it's a common occurrence on the X1's.

I definitely think car brands have started cost-cutting with short-life brakes, similar to the games they play with OEM tires. My last car was a 2007 Mazda CX-7 and those brakes lasted over 80k miles, so I know I'm not hard on them.

Hopefully the Msport brakes on mine may last a bit longer.

I also had a Cx-7, but European version and used to replace brake rotors every 15.000 km because they always got warped. On the X1 I'm changing brake pad at around every 40.000 km and probably the discs will need replacement at 100.000 km.
