I see this and get excited for the m235i gran coupe that's coming. Should be a great replacement for the e46 I use to have. My f30 is nice but it's a big car compared to the e46

I have a 2014 M235i and I absolutely love it, it's the car that made me fall in love with the 3.0l/8 speed zf. It's a match made in heaven. Its peanut butter and jelly, bread and butter, cookies and milk.

Best thing about this car is, BMW got their head out their asses and realised a 2.0L can indeed make 300HP and 300+TQ.
What can they do with the 3.0L?

I'm currently in a 2011 335i and 8 yrs I'm ready for something new, always say I want to sit a little higher but don't really want a huge SUV. I've got 300 hp and can't live with anything much less than that.

This X2 M35i sounds like what I might be looking for but a few things bother me.

1. I've always owned rear wheel drive cars and not sure going to all wheel drive is something I can live with, don't need it in FL.
2. I don't like how the center console sits so low, the shifter and navi buttons seem really low to me.
3. I don't like the high padded bolster wrap they added around the console, someone sitting in the passenger seat cannot even see the cup holder and will have to go up and over to put a cup or bottle, just looks way too high to me from the pass view.
4. I like the new seats but no headrest worries me since I like to tilt my headrest slightly forward but I won't be able to do that in these, will they still be comfortable without a headrest?
5. Getting a new car after 8 yrs, I wish this had the all digital gauge cluster that all the new BMW's are getting. I know it would push the price up but man...there really nice looking.
6. I have the inline 6 and it's butter smooth, I would really miss that inline 6 engine.

I'm probably going to have to wait for the new G20 3 series to make a final decision. I'm still also deciding but haven't driven the X3 M40i. It's exciting trying to decide what to buy but also nerve racking to make the right decision.

5. Interesting I thought bmw's new digital dash looks the worst of the 3 Germans. Which is interesting to me since it's the newest and they took so much time to develop it. To each their own though.

My default position is the M340i. I'd consider downsizing to an X2 M35i but it would have to be considerably less expensive. I have a feeling it won't be.

True on the BHP front, but as I said before, Ms specifically (and BMWs generally) haven't traditionally been about boasting the biggest BHP figures or the best 0-60 times.

I wonder how many times you could run a current 330i around an autocross without experiencing limp mode? Compared to the original M3?

You highlight the contradiction between new and old pretty well with that statement - if BMW has become a company focused on BHP and how "quick" a car is, there are other manufacturers who are much better at that - Audi and MB to name a few.
Hmmm, my 340i M Sport has no badging whatsoever and I optioned non M badged wheels with high performance tyres! It has many extras over a base car... and you don’t buy a 330i for autocross..!!

Personally 0-60 times and HP don’t worry me too much, my car corners flat & handles great as an all rounder & is actually pretty good fun! But let’s hope the G20 is better still... it really has to be.. as you say everyone else has better HP & performance stats but BMW should be all about the drive...

Darn right, and boy are they late to the party with that! It’s a real shame the new 330i isn’t getting this engine (or at least tuned for this output) or maybe it actually will...

I have a regular base X2 as a loaner right now, my beater 2017 X1 has some serious road damage recently....I don't understand the X2 at all, the guys at my dealer only laughed and said it's a "sporty version of your X1". The roofline, the trunk and the terrible baseline seats just don't make sense. Sticker on my loaner is 41k and it's bone ass basic. Now I'm sure this Msport bastardized version is better but again I just don't get why bmw would put a smaller lower roof lined X1 out.

Similar to you, last year I sold my 2011 335i that I bought new. I got an M2 and been loving it ever since. Although I think BMW did great with the X2 and I'm amazed at how good they made it look and perform despite the drivetrain layout. However, I'm a purist and can never do with a transverse mounted front engine, it just feels wrong. I really hate this segment but if I had to buy one of the offerings it would be X2 easy.

Well they couldn't fit a 3.0liter in it anyway because it's a transverse engine.
So mount it the right f****** way

I love the looks and smaller-ish size. I'm a bit underwhelmed that they are putting a "35" badge in a 2 liter engine.

Perhaps the new 1 series hatchback will have the same engine? It would be cool to see a new bmw hatch with 300 horses, but I wonder how much better it will be than the Golf R. I mean, at least in the States, it is possible to get this VW for like $40k new (loaded)... so if bmw starts selling a 300hp hatch, it either should be at a similar price point or it needs to be much better in other ways.

35i = 2L four, 40i = 3L six... that’s just the way it is now because technology means so much more power is now available from smaller engines. They can’t badge 190hp, 250hp and 300hp cars as 20i just because they’re all 2 litre engines

Where BMW’s nomenclature once related directly to engine size it now, rather confusingly, bears no relationship to actual engine size (20i excepted) but harks back to those larger engines, having now been downsized, but tuned to produce similar outputs to those old engines to which the badging relates.... simples!!

And yes, the new 1er should get a 135i with this very engine which, though not the straight six of the current car, should be a hoot, as long as they get the fwd chassis right. And yes it will sell at a competitive price to the Golf R I’d bet.... so around £35k or $40... and I’m really hoping the new 1, despite its fwd layout, is a good drive because the 3 has got too big now!

It's funny to me how BMW justifies switching to transversal FWD platforms to make the cars more practical and roomier inside, and then this comes out. Honestly, if it's going to have the option of AWD, it will need a transmission tunnel just like if it were RWD, so passenger room in the back seat will be the same. The X2, specifically, with its "coupe" profile, takes away practicality even further.

There's simply not even one thing that the X2 does better than the previous gen X1. It may look better (and looks are subjective) but that's it.

This whole move to FWD did not benefit the customers at all, it just made the cars cheaper to produce, but at the same time, this "M performance" crap warrants an even higher price tag.

In this class of small SUVs, BMW has the best offer with X1 and X2 pair.
All of the competition is FWD based, so BMW did the correct move. Now they launched something special and the result is pretty good.
We have to take into account that this class is not adressed to enthusiasts, there is an M2C for those who put the driving dynamics on the first place

Right. It will be cheaper to make so BMW makes money there but then they will add on M Performance and make even more money on top of the savings they already made by making it AWD. It's clever marketing that makes the consumer feel like your getting the best deal. I've watched most of the video reviews on this and most all immeditately go ga ga over the m sport steering wheel. It's not all about the steering wheel. I would assume that the M35i with some nice well equipped options is going to head in the 60-65K figures. For that amt I'd be looking for something other than an X2. Ha

I know it's subjected but I do like the looks of the X2 over the X1. Also offering a nice colored heads up display is a huge + in this segment of the market too. I also think getting rid of that gray around the wheel arches is a huge winner for the M35i I'm just not crazy about some of BMW's choices for the interior layouts design.

I never thought I'd ever see BMW produce a FWD/AWD vehicle and then add M Performance in the same product. Are they trying to change our mindset?
