RTTI - General question

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
How does the Real Time Traffic Information system getting it's information?

Are we BMW drivers with GPS automatically reporting the traffic situation back to BMW while driving? So your own driving on the road will be a part of the input to the RTTI?

Or what does BMW mean with vehicle fleets?

My understanding is precisely that - it calculates routes using algorithms from data sourced via GPS, official updates (emergency service details), highways data & car information.

It would seem sensible for them to use their own source of data, wouldn't it?

Sure it would.

Anyway, I have just sent a e-mail to the Swedish BMW customer service regarding the text "GPS data from vehicle fleets".
Will see what they are answering on Monday. Will keep you updated.

This is an extract from the information at the back of the UK BMW X1 Price List regarding RTTI:

"The traffic information required for the Service  is calculated by a variety of means including  using what is known as Floating Car Data. In this  sense, every ConnectedDrive-capable  BMW functions as a “mobile traffic reporter” (Floa ting Car). The individual position  and sensor data of the vehicle calculated during t he trip is transferred – completely  anonymously – to BMW and a service provider togeth er with up-to-date time information"

Just spent last week down in Cornwall/Devon and I was impressed with how accurate the Traffic Info seemed to be. I was also wondering how it was gathering the info so thanks for this thread.

I received the following answer from BMW Customer Support in Sweden.

Quote:
Yes you contribute to RTTI data by the GPS in your car. Even by having Google see your place in your smartphoneapp or by other apps that use your postition based on your smartphone.
The data is sent to a company that works specifically with this type of data and then forwards it on to the BMW-users and other users of similar services.
