Most efficient way to save our planet would be to get rid of corrupt politicians. Can we get a button to enable that feature?🤔

I hate it. I shut it day one. I’m so happy I don’t have to turn it off every time I start the car. I must confess, it annoys me when I’m a passenger in someone else’s car and the engine shuts at every stop.

I have it off 95% of the time.
My M2 preset (which is my highway preset) turns it on. So when I come to a stop on the highway for any reason the engine shuts off.

If I’m on the highway the engine is warmer than in the city, and the battery has more time to recharge. That’s why I don’t do it in town. I think if you do a lot of short drives it will ruin your battery and you’ll get the low charge message.

There's hardly another thread in the internet with such a broad consensus; it brings me to tears!
And yes, like a Triple-Seven pilot, me launching the machine goes:

- Fasten seat belt
- Turn all assistants off by long-pressing the button
- Turn the Sound Control off
- turn Start/Stop off
- Press M1
- Fire the engine
- Wait till the machine drops rpm to normal
- Give her beans.

It has some taste of a religious ceremony, but somehow I love it.

Only time it's is if I've accidentally pressed it. It seems to work well, but the intermittent noise bugs me. I like hearing the engine at all times.

BMW had a technical article detailing that ASS will cause the rod bearings to be starved of oil and the loss of oil film meant that they have to coat the rod bearings with some compound to "maximize" the longevity.

meaning - planned obsolescence in lay speak

Exactly. If OP are thinking to save gas, don't buy a sport car.

I use it in certain circumstances. When I’m out on the backroads or carving canyons: no way! But on the commute to/from work when I’m sitting at stoplights for 45 seconds at a time: yep!

Ok, how much do these stupid things save anyway? What quantification to be worth all that extra stress on parts constantly shutting off/restarting the engine? I suppose if one is stuck on crazy gridlock moving at a snail's pace, maybe. I dunno guys, educate me.

Fortunately the 2018 model remembers the last setting and I have mine turned off. It’s never an issue for me anyway, even in loaners, because the first thing I do is choose the sport mode setting, which disables ASS on all BMWs.

Ya, not like those cars they equip it w are going offroad in the dark. Such a wasteful invention and another thing waiting to break.

When I first got my car I was initially disappointed they didn't have them as I thought it had it due to the cutouts, but the sales made sense saying it would just mess up (unnecessarily wet) the car every time spraying water over the area. How blocked do headlights really get enough to really need a spray? Like I said, unless running in a night safari in a 4x4.

I absolutely despise this feature. I'm so glad it shuts itself off in sport mode

I can't imagine the sprayers would even work except under perfect circumstances. I guess it's an EU thing like the fender extensions and it's just cheaper for BMW to make the car the same way for every market even though only .0000001% of US buyers would use such a thing .00000001% of the time.
