Newer member Introduction (2018 X1 with misfire issue)

Hello to all,

I am somewhat new here and have learned quite a bit, mostly about performance mods as I'll never grow out of loving performance. I guess when your dad is 80 and drives a stage 2 Audi S3, your kids are probably going to be stuck with the bug too. Anyway, thank you to everyone that posts about anything related to the X1 and to the members that I've reached out to for information. I'm new to forums in general and there is great information here.

I have a 2018 X1 2.0 xDrive that I bought new in 2018. About a week after I bought the car I was driving it and it started to run like it jumped timing or like it was misfiring. It gave a drivetrain malfunction error and went in to a run safe mode. I brought the car to the dealer and they claimed it was a misfire on Cylinder #2 from a bad coil pack. They swapped coils packs and said it was all set. I drove the car for several months and the problem occurred again and this time the dealer said it was a bad injector. The Same problem happened 3 more times in the course of the first year. I should mention the the problem occurs only when it's raining heavily or if the roads are very wet, and it happens randomly. Also, after shutting the car off for a good period of time, the problem seems to correct itself until it happens again, randomly. Each time the dealer had the car they claimed the techs fixed the issue even though they could never duplicate the problem.

I called BMW North America to express my frustration of having a new car that has been back to the dealer 5 times for the same issue and they basically said too bad. I figured I was stuck with the car, which I Really like other than the misfire issue, and decided to start modding it. So, in stages I did the K&N cold air intake, Axle Back Super Sprint Exhaust and had Turner Performance tune the car on the dyno. It made 265hp at the wheels and was a blast to drive. Unfortunately the misfire issue keeps coming back. I tried different combinations of mods and back to stock to see if the problem changed or went away but no difference regardless.

The car went back to the dealer again. They said they would not work on it with the SS exhaust and with the tune. Removed the tune and put the stock exhaust back on and currently at the dealer Again. Now they are claiming the tune was responsible for the misfire. Not the case as I have proof that it started well before I did any mods or tuned the car. The car has been at different dealerships and had different techs work on it collectively over a month.
I am thinking of taking legal action but not sure if it's worth the time/money. It sucks because as I said I like the car otherwise. I will get the car back tomorrow after a week and the dealer has not been able to fix anything. Not sure what to do at this point.

Here is a picture of my car after a wash. I apologize for the off center picture but I don't have many pictures of the car.

If there is one nearby, I'd seek out an independent BMW specialist. The dealer is more worried about protecting their collective rears than solving you problem. An independent actually wants to resolve your problem. Going legal will cause the dealer/BMW to close ranks, and prolong your pain, as a customer. An independent will also ignore your mods, provided they are demonstrably NOT part of the problem

Thanks ttimbo, that is definitely a good idea and probably what I'll end up doing. There is no doubt that the problem started one week after I bought the car and no mods were done to the car, everything is documented by the dealer. Any mods I did to the car were almost a year after I purchased it and didn't affect the issue either way. Obviously it's a tough pill to swallow paying someone to fix a problem that should be covered under warranty; but as you said probably the only way it's going to get resolved.

Sorry to read about your problem. Intermittent faults can be a nightmare to fix, often because the fault does not show when taken in for repair. From your description it looks like moisture is getting into wiring/electronics causing temporary problems. A good specialist should be able to sort using fault codes as a starting point but my best advice is to agree to only bring it into the workshop when the actual fault is showing, it can save hours trying to trigger/replicate the problem. Good
Luck

Thank you. Yeah, it's like the old story about the kid who cried wolf. Just tough to get to a dealer when the problem decides to act up. Every time the dealer gets the car it shows a #2Cylinder misfire. 99% sure that this is a generic code. Another member suggested the mass airflow meter might be creating a fault if moisture gets to it.
Going to eventually bite the bullet and bring it to an independent specialist.

Wait, there's such a stored code and the dealer can't fix it? A misfire isolated to one cylinder is one of the simplest situations, in my opinion. The most obvious causes are a bad coil pack, a bad injector or a bad spark plug. After that, coolant leaks, valve issues, and more serious stuff. A bad MAF, or bad gas, or other issues would affect all cylinders equally.

An indy would have plenty to go on, but if the dealer sends you home, I'd definitely inquire if the regional tech can inspect. You might have to ask BMW, and the dealer won't be pleased, but...

I think the dealer is just using this as an excuse being that they can't diagnose the true issue. The coil packs and plugs have all been swapped with the same results, nothing changes.
There is little doubt that moisture is causing the issue and I believe it is affecting more than just #2 cylinder.
Probably going to try an independent tech when I figure out who in the area to trust with the car. Either that or try to get to a dealer if/when the problem arises again. The hard part is to not shut the car off before someone can scan it. Never know when it might act up.
Thanks for the feedback!
