Drove the car today on errands and no testing. FAF in 73 degree weather. I do truly miss the smooth revband of the TDI though but not going back! Car revband feels like stock but faster.
Waiting for intake and we will see what that does to revband. Maybe I might put the pedal tuner back on, maybe. |

A one-time lean code won't trip the CEL. If it persists, it definitely will, usually a serious one like CAT damage or other apocalytic-sounding thing.
It would be worth monitoring fuel pressure when this happens. It sounds like a delivery issue, given that the injectors have the capacity, and the mapping is otherwise tracking normally. |

Down to half a tank of gas now.. was able to hit lean on stock map still. Keep in mind regular driving is still great in map 2 and doesn't hit lean without a little effort. Starting off at high rpm ie downshifting , then the afr goes lean, and laying into the throttle doesn't let it keep up. I'll wait until I get another new tank to drive it harder again.

Terry, Good afternoon. I hope you are doing well. Today I added an CTS Turbo Intake. The temperatures were quite warm today, about 75, up 20 degrees from the last time I drove the car. Map 2, Safety Ceiling 30, on WOT, failsafe kicks in and goes to map 8. It happened twice. Map 0, Safety Ceiling 30, on WOT, NO FAILSAFE kicks in. Stays in map 0. No issues. Attached is (1) log that shows what is happening. Any ideas that you can help me out with? THANK YOU! |

So yesterday I drove about forty miles on the stock box at map 0 (no safety is on map 0 per Terry). And I logged the entire about one hour trip and provided the logs to Terry. The temperature outside was 65 degrees.
As I was logging I was watching the App IAT sensor to get a sense of how warm the intake was in a mix of off and on-highway traffic. Never got above 100 degrees farenheit. And then I drove home from my trip about forty miles on the stock box at map 2 (with 30 safety). I logged the entire about one hour trip - though I did not provide any logs to Terry. The temperature outside was about 75 degrees. As I was logging I was watching the App IAT sensor to get a sense of how warm the intake box was in a mix of off and on-highway traffic. The IAT did raise, but not above 122 degrees farenheit. The car in map 2, was definitely a hoot to drive. My Koso never measured any boost level higher than 29 PSI in spike. Terry did get back to me with the logs in map 0 and he basically said that the aftermarket intake did do something to the map sensor. And when I asked is there anything we can do with the JB4 to support the aftermarket intake. After Terry explaining, in so many words, that the AFR of the stock vs. aftermarket intake looked similar, he said no, that the aftermarket intake was doing something to the map sensor. I then compared the logs of aftermarket intake in map 0 and in map 2 compared the logs to the stock intake in map 0 and in map 2. The logs on AFT did look indeed similar. The boost, however, with aftermarket intake, went off the charts, like massive power, hence the failsafe in map 2. Since I now understand there is no failsafe in map 0, I looked at the logs and sure as shit, there was still a lot of boost - or appeared to be in map 0, stock, but I didn't beat that hard on it. OK, I've been rambling - but I think I know what the map sensor / IAT temperature is causing the system to err, crash on more air. I don't think it's more air per se (maybe, because of lean conditions), however I also think it is the temperature that the map sensor sees. When I was running the aftermarket intake, the IAT was 145 degrees. Makes sense as the air coming into the intake is practically being heat soaked in the engine bay. Versus the airbox is so tightly closed, as well as double filtration, that it forces the temperatures to be lower - ie. thick plastic, and double filters, etc. This makes me think billnchristy, what IAT temperatures are you seeing on the stock ECU with the Eventuri unit that tripped to the computer to show lean conditions? As well as rice_rocket88 with your homemade intake? Temperatures are very important, but I do think as billnchristy had previously said, that the intake provides massive power to the engine, we now just need to find someone who gives a shit, from a tuning perspective (I added that), to figure it out. For now, I would have everyone halt their intake purchases until this can be figured out. I for one, at this point in time, am done with all my projects. It's been a whirlwind the last couple of weeks. It was the TDI (done and still for sale), the boost gauge (love it still and man it's been so much help), the JB4 (very happy with this as well), and the CTS Turbo Intake (made it work). Now I am just going to drive, and pay attention to the boards, and other developments on intake systems, to see if 'someone figured it out' based on my hunches and thoughts above. OK, duh. Simple task. I took the .csv file from the aftermarket intake, looked at AFR, did a min/avg/max on it. Sure as shit, shows super lean - just like that cool VBS macro tool did. So now I don't know why Terry said AFR's look good. Ah, not at initial glance. But I just ran the same logic against my map2 on the highway with stock intake. And get same result. So maybe!?

Figured it out. Matched the VBS import. TRIMS.... (Fuel Trim is the adjustment the engine computer (PCM) makes to the fuel mixture to maintain a balanced air/fuel ratio.) Therefore, like I said earlier - I do not think the fuel pump can keep up.

Done for today folks. That's what it looks like. Adding an intake only works if we have a bigger fuel pump. Damn it!

Air flow cannot be that much greater. I think it does show that the engineers ringed out every last bit fo performance that they could with the given components.
I guess that's what makes this an m-sport over an m. Only so much bespoke parts, everything else out of the bin. If we could have gotten a couple more pieces we'd be in the A45 AMG range. |

Very interesting information guys.. Sorry I'm out camping so I don't have a lot of free time to geek it out. One thing to mention is that I've been running my own intake all year long since last summer and only recently had issues.. Possibly because of the temperatures dropping that it has finally maxed things out. I'm still hoping a new tank of fuel can help out.. But it could certainly just be the intake plus cold temps. I didn't hear if everyone is running 93 octane out there either.
It is a little concerning if our fuel pump is only rated for 190lph, it sounds like that could be the bottleneck, but until we gather all this info together it's hard to pass judgement. If the injectors are shared with the 6cyl turbos, then presumably it would supply enough fuel. It would be great to know if they were equivalent to 600 or even 750cc size then it should have plenty of capabilities. At this point I'm willing to throw the stock box on and give it a run this week before I run my tank of gas out. |
