getBMWparts.com just replied to my inquiry:

“Hello,

That grille is black, however BMW lists it as only compatible with vehicles equipped with the M Sport Aerodynamic package/bumper. We'd recommend checking around the BMW forums online to see if anyone has tried fitting this to the standard bumper.

Thank you,

Can anyone confirm that it fits with my 2020 x1 xDrive? I do not have the M Sport package.

Just confirmed with BMW, and getBMWparts.com, that this particular grille will NOT fit on standard x1 xdrives, only on M Sport lines.

Tks for the input anyways. BMW said they plan on making some soon though. Might just plasti-dip in the time being...

Didn't you read what I wrote? I have this exact part installed on my own 2020 X1 NON M style. Btw it was ordered and installed by my local BMW dealer.

All grills have the same shape/size. It is just the configurator that tells they don't fit.

Does anyone have the steps to remove the grille from the 2020/2021 X1?

I also can confirm that 51138080619 fits cars with x-line.

I watched this video before installing:

The mounting points are still the same.

Warning, blood might be spilled

Top six tabs are pretty easy to get to, the hardest were the corners and the middle (that's where things got bloody)

I used this set of tools, I found it being really helpful because the tools are angled. That helped getting into tight spaces as well as applying enough pressure to release the tabs.

Overall, the process went better than I anticipated and there's definitely no need to remove the bumper.

Take your time, be careful but don't be afraid to pull the grill. Good luck!

Agree, I didn’t think I would like it but pics really are good. I wonder if part of the reason is that the kidney grills are now so large they look better knocked back with black. What do others think, are grills now too large and benefitting from being more subtle?

I think plast-dip is the way to go, more eco friendly and probably cheaper.

Interesting. I tried to follow that video but I don't think it applied to LCI M Sport F48s. Ended up going to the dealership, they had to partially take off the bumper. Totally worth it!

Still my favorite mod

Any tips to remove the grill? I noticed that the 2021 model do not need any tools other than plying tools. Would love to replace them on my own. How long did you took to remove the grill?

Those on x5 looks extremely easy.

Thanks in advance.

nooo. you can do this without removing anything but the grill itself.

just need to feel where the clips are and can get them unclipped. I was able to unclip a few with my fingers but the top ones are harder get to. Some people used a modified fork and was able to unclip them. I got most off then just yanked (broke top clips) to get the top ones out but that's fine for me as I was replacing with the black anyways.

Once you get one side out, the other side is easy as you'll have more access to get to them.
