WTF is the matter with some poeple at my work?!?!?!

OK, need to vent for a sec... Anyone ever been in this situation before?

At work there are like 2-3 of us (all same age group 24-27) who usually go out to lunch together. I love going out for lunch because it gets me out of the office for a while to re-group. To me and the guys I go out with it's totally worth the $8-15 for lunch during the day. Anyways, there is this new guy who seems cool enough and keeps on asking to join us for lunch. No big deal but here is the problem, he brings his own brown bag lunch everyday. He stated on the first day we all went out that he thought "spending money on lunch out was a waste". This kid literally walks into the restaurant with us sits down and eats his lunch. The other day he actually asked the server for a glass of water. I am very embarrassed to go out with him but he is always coming up to us at like 10am asking about where we are all going for lunch and if he can join us. The first time it happened I told him that I didn't think the restaurant would allow it for health code reasons and he shouldn't do it. Once we left, he was all like, "See I told you it wasn't a big deal."

I don't want to be rude, but I'm about to basically cut this kid off. Am I wrong at all??? Anyone ever work in a restaurant before and have an opinion on this? We are talking places from like Chik-fil-a to Chili's, all different types of places doesn't matter to him.

LMAO - wow. Maybe he has Asperger's? Never worked in a restaurant, but I think that's very weird, not to mention bad etiquette.

If you don't want to actually call him on it...next time he asks where you're going, say you're not sure and then just all leave without him. Do this a few times and he'll get the hint....unless he has Asperger's, haha.

Tell him straight up that he's being low class about his restaurant etiquette. And then tell him to not be a douche and pony up his cheap-ass $8-15. This is a recession, the restaurants and wait staff need the coinage.

Well, aside from you not wanting to hang with him in the first place, I might tell him that its incredibly cheap and disrespectful to bring a home-made lunch into a place that sells lunch.

Sure he can come with you, but he has to actually dine in the restaurant to go there.

That's funny. He is geting the best of both worlds, eating out and eating for free. LOL. I wouldn't walk into a restaurant with my own lunch, that is just plain wrong, he probabbly don't even understand that, and if he can't understand what a simple concept like that is... then he probabbly won't understand other things and that's what you need to think about. This kid can get you in trouble maybe at work and not even realize what he is doing since he has a different perception. just my opinion. I have dealt with people like that and it only gets worse from there. Good luck.

A lot of places don't even allow outside food to be brought inside. Either way I think you have been too nice to the noob. Time to tell him to pony up or stay at work and eat his lunch. Or at least eat his lunch later and have an appetizer or coffee with you guys if he just wants to chat and hangout.

Next time you go out, get up and go to the restroom and find your waiter/waitress. Ask them to find your little tag along and tell him he can't bring his lunch there and he needs to throw it away or leave. I would make sure this is one of my favorite places for lunch, and continue to go back there. Make him feel like a douche!

I could see if he wanted to go every once in a while, even not eat just try and get familiar with all of you. But bring his brown bag lunch with yall? Wow. I wouldn't knock him though if he was just wanting to go along.

Actually reminds me of a friend growing up. No matter where we ate with his family (large family) he brought mcdonalds. One of the pickiest eaters ever.

I would slip the waitress/waiter a $5 and ask them to tell him that outside food is not permitted. After a few places do that he will probably stop coming or just start buying food.

Call around, find 5 or 6 places that DO NOT ALLOW OUTSIDE FOOD. And only go there. Act like it is coincidence. Then when he eventually gives up go back to normal.

OK i saw this thread and showed it to my lady, who is currently a server at 2 places and a full time student.

she says:

bringing in your own food to a restaurant is totally wrong. from a servers point of view thats taking money directly out of their pockets. which in turn will get you guys bad service, or some tampered food.

her advice:
tell him "your more then welcome to come to lunch with us, if you want to buy lunch"

hes the new guy, you gotta check him a little bit
