It might look like a stupid question but I haven't read the entire 62 pages. For MY2019 from what I understand there won't be no more «*regular*» M2 and nothing to expect with the B58 the «*Base*» M2 will be a M2 competition which will be close to the current M2 except for the S55 engine. Following that launch a track focus CS version will follow. Is it what to expect in 2019?

BimmerMat135, for a selection and an interpretation of info going into all sorts of directions in the recent past, see the first post of this thread.

FWIW, see also this comment posted in the sister thread:

Curious as most petrolheads tend to be, we all try to guess on the basis of bits and pieces surfaced here and there on the interwebs, what M2 stuff the cooks are preparing inside the ///M kitchen, what recipes and experiments they're working on. But cooks can change their minds, improve things, come up with different ideas. And the boss of the restaurant can (eventually further to recommendations by accountants) also order cooks to remove a meal from the menu, use different ingredients, urge to speed up, urge to limit costs, etc. Furthermore, smells lingering from the kitchen can be misinterpreted by anyone who's not involved.

Reality-check: BMW and BMW M have not released yet any official statement about M2 variant(s). Not even a teaser. So BMW doesn't have to explain anything and, officially, there are no "changes" at all. We got to respect that.

As we all know, developing a car is by nature an organic, evolutionary project. Only the officially released version is the one that truly matters, rather than earlier 'work in progress' versions. Alike drafting a letter: the final version that's received by the addressee is the one that matters - you can keep your draft versions for future inspiration.

Legit rumors that surface from time to time may sometimes be accurate at certain points in time, but could be outdated at a later stage. Some idea may have been considered during a development stage, but later shelved. Nothing's written in stone until the project 'sign off'. VINs are accurate though: those test mules truly exist and give us an idea of what could be expected from a future production car. All the rest can be subject to numerous changes as time goes by.

Take for example the 1M: the car was supposed to get a carbon fiber roof and functional side vents + only at a late development stage the halogen lights were replaced by Xenon lights:

"Was at M studio this week [October 2011] as part of my ED and got to talk to a lead engineer for quite a while. He clarified that these front fender areas that now suggest the vents, originally were meant to have real functional vents. They'd be even bigger than the ~2cm they are now. (Thus cutting them open in the shape they are now would apparently not provide much aerodynamic benefit, i.e. release significant wheel well air pressure). However they couldn't get the fender sheet stamping molds accurate enough within the allotted time/budget. Particularly the two fenders sides exactly mirroring each other in shape proved too hard to achieve with functional vents. Pity, but I do respect that they either do it right or not at all."
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...87&postcount=7

"[T]hey were tight on a budget plus they were really running out of time. So only one interior color was approved. Same went for some of the other "things" M wanted to do to the car. Like functional vents in the front fenders (the crease), they wanted to produce a carbon fiber roof, but they were running out of time. So in the end their hands were tied by time and budget."

About Xenon lights instead of halogen lights:
"It was a plan of BMW to bring the 1M Coupe with halogen headlights and not with Xenonlights as standard equipment, because they wanted to reduce the price under the magic line of 50.000 Euro. So the nearly ready 1M with the halogen lights came to the acceptance test (TÜV) and failed. Why ? Because the parking lights of the halogen headlights where too much inwards (because of the wider fenders the 1M got compared to the stock E82) and so BMW had to put the Xenons in as standard equipment (the parking lights are more external because of the "angel eye design" [coronas]) and the price raised to 50.500 Euro (later 51.500 Euro) [Germany]."
http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...9&postcount=92
Quite likely we may hear similar development back-stories in the future about M2 variants that made it, or didn't make it, to the final cut.

I'm not trying to stir the pot but today I went in to finish paper work on a new 3 series we are buying and the advisor told me to hold off on putting a deposit down on an MY18 M2 (ditching my M4 for a M2) because there was some meeting going down in Bavaria to discuss allocations (among other things), including the MY19 M2 Competition "package"... So I may have some interesting information by this Saturday... Pretty sure production starts this July.

Tangentially related - my for sale M2 not moving so this uncertainty may be driving prices down. Trying to sell my M2 because I am not using it all at the moment plus need to make financal and physical room for the new M2.

Oh yes, and may have found a Group N E30 M3 to buy. Trying to persuade the owner to part ex his M3 to me for the M2 !

If I owned my E30 M3 still I wouldn't make the trade (down) to an M2.

I wouldn't make the trade DOWN to the M2 either but the gentleman concerned is in his early 70's and I don't think he plans on racing the M3 any more. Whereas I raced E30 M3's for several years and should never have sold mine.

In VIN sheets of ALL test mules (October 2016 through today), the model name was now changed from "M2 Competition" to "M2 Cs". The "M2 Competition" model name has vanished from all VIN sheets.

So, "M2 Competition", "M2 CS" or "M2 Cs" ?

Below two USA-spec test mules built yesterday and today.

At this point I think they are just messing with us.
Something is coming though, and in a few months all will be clear.

If true, at least we will not be telling our insurance companies that we have a new M2 Competition on the way and watch the premium skyrocket.

If BMW changes again the model name in the VIN sheets, but this time to "CSI: Bayern", then they're fooling us for sure.

totally. Personally.. I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it from "S55" to "B58B30T0" at some point, if all that's needed is to change all the info in the system as they actually get closer to production. they camouflage vehicles.. why not apply some virtual " Camo" as well.
