I swear no one has these pads. The dealership emailed me a coupon. Said $257 for pads and sensor with labor. Or $565 for pads, rotors and sensor with labor. But they said if I wanted them to do it, they need two days to get parts because no dealership in Ohio has them in stock. Lol

Just hit 50k miles.

I had to change the front pads @ 45,478Km, that's 28,258.72 miles

Part numbers used by the dealer
34106860019 pads
34356888167 sensor
83192158851 paste
83195a260a6 brake cleaner

I've got the X2 sDrive20i, I guess similar parts would be used on the sDrive28i
M35i is a different story

My front pads went around 23k. It was under free maintenance then. I already ordered the correct front pads. Guessing I will be replacing them before winter.

M35i has some weird parts. Especially the engine air filter. I could only find OEM or K&N. No one else had the right shape.

So you guys got me all paranoid and I went to check my box of pads.. I have a powerstop PST 17-2240 for the rear and PST17-1875 for the front.

Now I can't say 100% but seeing as the two cars are parked beside each other in the garage... the X1 with the "regular" sized brakes has a pad that has pretty thin "wings" that go to the caliper bracket, and the blue M brakes on my m35i are about 40% fatter. This matches the powerstop pads in the box. Obviously I can only look in the clear wrapping and then look behind the spokes of my wheel so my eyes might be playing tricks.

I did a quick google search and .. damn they are sold out everywhere.. but EBAY has them! And when I click on compatible vehicles it does list specifically the m35i and the john cooperworks mini which sounds about right.

Maybe you should hop on and quickly buy them?


As for the air filters... yeah I went with the sponge filter from UK (forget the name now) which after 2 years some of the material started falling apart) so I bought the K&N one.

I already told the stealership to order the parts and to get the rear done Friday. Too much going on with work, and kids schools. My next day off is the 28th when I would actually be able to get it done myself. And right now I am the only one scheduled to work the 26th and 27th when there is supposed to be four of us working each day.

Totally understand the lack of time! Not that the stock pads wear as fast as the fronts anyways.. I might just swap to my powerstops this winter changeover and keep the stock pads as backup..or heck I might just ride it out longer haha. My wife's x1 lasted to 40k and I'm only 25... although I'm on the highway vs he easy local back road driving. I also tend to use the gears to regulate my speed without many hard stops.

Who knows..

So for those of you that had your brake pad sensor(s) trip on you, did you get a notice that you had x-amount of miles before you'd need a change or did the system just pop-off & say you were past due?

Dealer just said my rears had 5mm left & not to change them out yet. A few days later the sensor on the rears triggers, WTF/SMH. Just finding it weird the MMI system went to 'you're overdue for this maintenance by x-miles' mode vs giving a countdown.

ETA: Car as 21k mi & change on it.

Mine popped up recently and said about 1300 miles left but it went down quickly. That was about two weeks ago? Today it said 410 miles left.
My first change on the front pads was at 26334 miles.

I just changed them again at 52885 miles this morning when I swapped on my winter wheel setup. They measured 5mm back in June at 43812 miles. So this will be my second set of pads on the front. The first time was done for free by the dealership.

The rears lasted about 50000 miles. The rear pads and rotors were replaced at 50049 miles.


I wouldn't trust the dealer measurements. They're measuring one pad probably. You've got to look at all of them. The sensor is only attached to one pad in the front and one pad in the rear.

Hey Rich,

The biggest thing that fools me is that the pads do wear unevenly, and most of the time it's the inside pad that wears more! In theory they should have measured it better, but I have gotten the brake countdown a bunch of times, and then when it realizes I'm good to go it resets. Once that brake sensor hits though it's a different message! Basically there's no way to tell, the car is really just approximating them and the true warning is the sensor (or you change them ahead of time).

I have had my set sitting waiting for me to install them, but I'm still doing very well on my brakes. I'm at 35K ish on my car right now and I was expecting to change them over after I swapped my winter tires on, but there's really so much meat on them I think I'll wait it out.. really it's tempting since I have the new brake pads, but I have 3 cars to change tires on so I didn't really have the energy to do it this time around.

This is the perfect example that the brake wear warning can't keep track, as I'm running my brakes long, vs Chowser here is already onto his second set (I imagine if I still baby it I could make it to the 50K much like my wife did).

I wish my car was babied. My daughter throws it into Sport+ whenever she borrows it and constantly does hard stops. She enjoys it better than her mom's Camaro which she says has horrible brakes. My daughter drives the same in her Subaru and the original pads still have plenty of life. She's at 43k miles.

Haha something for me to look forward to! Our minivan goes through brakes much faster, but it's fat and heavy as a pig... so coming to stops require a lot of effort. I'm usually changing them every 2 years .. although it's at a trusty 240K on it

100% guys. Good points on the last few posts, I agree with your comments.

I'm usually easy on brake pads & usually do my own brakes but the service this time was a freebie to me so I let them do it. My service tech def also thinks the inside pad(s) were likely worn way more than the outside, & it's the outside the tech likely measured/reported on last week.

On a lighter note, the dealership did have a new X1 M in the showroom (no X2 though), the X1 looked pretty good inside & out FWIW.
