I never do that. It’s an invitation for someone to screw with you.

If I see another nice car, and in a lot that is busy and unlikely to allow cars to stay '6 spaces from anybody' I will park next to them. I figure they aren't likely to ding me, and they might get peace of mind from relaizing I won't ding them either. It's like the second best version of the wall/support beam - safe on that side.

Years ago I worked with a kid who thought it was funny to park as close as possible next to a nice car that was way out of the way. Don't remember the nice car but I do remember he had a POS wrangler. People suck.

When I take my nice car out, I tend to park far away from everyone in hopes that no one parks next to me. But when I take my daily commuter beater out, I park as close as I can to the stores and next to whomever...its great!

Happens all the time that I am parked way in left field somewhere and a car is parking right next to mine close enough where the door can dent. Even once when I was still in the car, a van pulls right up close no others cars anywhere nearby and the guy just smiles. I drove away to another part of the lot. I think some of these creeps just want to park close to a nice car to check it out, just be associated with nice things, or just like a calf wanting to be with a herd close together. I hope that is all it is. I always check around for dings and such when it happens. None of the explanations I have seen excuses not leaving at least a car space in between. I wouldn't mind it as much if they did that.

Some do, but I think most people are just complete idiots. I just watched a guy try to back in a 2500 extended cab Silverado into a corner spot going the wrong way in one of the university garages. Dude is sticking out like 3 feet around the corner, and when he leaves he won't be able to go back down the "out" way. He folded in his tow mirrors at least.

It's even worse when someone parks up tight to your drivers door if you own a coupe. I leave the offenders a note on their windscreen which reads Thanks.....for parking so fuking close, maybe next time you could leave a can opener so I can get in my car. Arseholes like you should take the bus

I remember taking a quick photo in a restaurant parking lot because the person next to me had been pretty close to the line. As I was taking, the owner came out and said (in my best dangr voice) "that lowly 3-series, I have a 5."
"Yeah, well you didn't care enough of your 5 to park it within the lines, so . . .snap"

Yeah, I've found in my experience that people who tend to park too close to other cars tend to get flats more often!
O.o I've also heard about bananas being lodged in tailpipes of the same said bad parkers. And even skin cream or lotion apparently on their windshields, little wonder then how they parked so terribly. All joking aside, true story, my first new car, shiny red sports car, 1990, wife and I go furniture shopping, place has huge, and I mean HUGE lot, is a nasty day, rain and lots of wind. So when we get there I head to the furthest spot away from entrance. We park and we are sitting for just a moment collecting our things and quickly talking about what we want to look at, etc. Wouldn't ya know it, a car pulls up right next to us. Not another car within 500' but this idiot has to park right next to us. Well, of course he opens his door as a gust of wind blows and the door swings open right into my brandy new car! If they guy didn't shit himself, turn green (because he saw my instant rage) and was ridiculously apologetic, I probably wouldn't been paying time to the State! But I had to ask him, like WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT, why did he have to park right next to us when there were so many options open. He had no answer and looked dumbfounded! True story... Talk about it often! I've always said that these useless Legislators could enact an actual useful law by requiring minimum width (9') and length parking spaces, period!!! Especially with the cost of today's vehicles... But ultimately nobody gives $0.02¢... |

I had this happen when I finalized my divorce. My '15 BRZ was only about 6 months old, but I had already done everything I wanted to it.
Came out from the courthouse to see someone must have karate kicked their door open to put such a huge dent in the door and taken off the paint/primer down to the bare metal. It was like a '77 Cutlass or something parked next to me. No bother in messing with them, you see that car at the courthouse they have no money or insurance. |
