Is launch control really that hard on an engine?
Not that I want to use it every day or anything, but how hard is this really on the engine of my M35i? Once a week, once a month?

It's harder on your transmission than your engine, but why would you want to use it? I can see why launch control would be available on a vehicle with a dual-clutch transmission, but it makes no sense to me why they would put it on a vehicle with an automatic transmission. I've used launch control on a 911 C4S Cab and it was a lot of fun, but I don't see the point of having it on an X2.

It is fun but it's kind of hard on the tranny. Don't do it repeatedly, the oil will overheat.
Some models limit the lifetime number of launches you can do to 100. There's a reason for that. |

I think some limit the LC to only 50. I’ve tested it on my X2M35i with dragy. It doesn’t make any difference than just flooring it. We don’t have enough power for it to really make a difference and we are AWD anyways. Save the trouble on your transmission.

Do you mean flooring from idle or brake/gas dual pedal rev out launches? I can’t see lc being any different than the manual version.

It's hard to say for sure, but they're certainly close. LC is going to manage things a little more carefully than your right foot can, mainly including not completely smoking the transmission with a 6K rpm input. Ok, it only slightly smokes it. It does other things too, who knows for sure.
One big advantage of the brakestand is that it's so easy to do. I really hate the car-in-sport, trans-in-sport, traction-control-off, and something I probably don't remember before giving it the ol' two feet. Just GO already! |

I still find it slightly confusing that you need to turn traction control OFF to use the launch control. I would think you'd WANT to have better traction management for something like that.

You take the traction control off because you want maximum acceleration. In the rain or.. better even in the snow, go ahead and dump on the gas and you'll understand the disappointment. The traction control shuts all the power down and your car will stop spinning tires. So.. traction control off, and launch the @#$@#$ out of it. I have to say I've tried the launch control a few times and it's pretty good. Driving a manual car in the past really is hard to find the point where you smoke the tires and when you stall the car. A quick brake stand and punch on the gas is pretty good, but the launch control gets the rev's up higher so you get more torque and a better jump.
Oh and yeah.. it's pretty bad for your transmission, although I don't think we have too much torque on our little 4 bangers to grenade it. Multiple launches in a row will definitely hurt something though. |

The point of launch control? Road and track numbers... Lol. If you can program this, which that's all it is.. It's one of those 'features' . I'd trade it for blind spot detection in a heartbeat though . But ever since there were cars, the need to race them will always be there!
