Hi
You have said you have the necessary factory options fitted to your car (retrofitting them does not work), so all the necessary hardware should exist to allow OTA CarPlay. The only way to tell 100% and/or enable OTA Apple CarPlay is to go to the BMW “connected drive” website for your country.

https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.pl/app/index.html

Register on the site and then register/enter your car VIN number ( a user can register/own more than one vehicle). You will then be able to buy various connected drive services (for example download Europe map], buy traffic information, concierge service etc. If the site offers you a CarPlay subscription then you can buy it and enable CarPlay. If you are able to buy a CarPlay OTA subscription then your car software will be updated by BMW through the car SIM and it will be available on your car idrive. Unfortunately, If “connected drive” says a CarPlay subscription is not available for your car then you will not be able to get CarPlay through BMW.
Good luck

Unfortunately bmw connected drive says a CarPlay subscription is not available for my car despite have all parts in car..
Could anybody look for this price list from BMW.de ?
https://www.bmw.de/content/dam/bmw/m...2921861564.pdf

page number 54. it proves that i only need to have navigation plus and bmw connected drive enabled.. in BMW X2 there is no option to buy 609 or 6U3 navigation system.. there are only 6U3 and 6UP available. (page 52)

Could anybody help me with resolve that problem?

Sorry, I read the price list link, on page 54 (my iPad) it deals with RTIi, concierge and wireless charging. I saw no reference to CarPlay. In case of mistake, I looked at page 45 ( und Ich kann deutsch sprechen/ lesen) and it shows car play preparation is available as part of an entertainment package but only in combination with navigation or navigation plus. On page 55 it does cover Apple CarPlay preparation 6CP
I apologise if I have misunderstood your point but late 2018 and 2019 BMW F48/F39 needs CarPlay preparation 6CP to have been purchased from factory. I am still advised for earlier cars a combination of Nav plus 6UP (larger screen needed), extended bluetooth and wlan can be enough for connected-drive to offer CarPlay.

The problem is that BMW has variations between markets and also specifications change from year to year (or more frequently). Now that BMW has stopped lifetime CarPlay as build option and gone to OTA (over the air) subscription service you have to have paid for option 6CP to get CarPlay in cars built from late 2018 and 2019 onwards. Unless you pay for option 6CP (€300) , you cannot get CarPlay. For U.S, I am told it is now included as standard but for most markets it is not.

Page 55 of your price list (maybe p54 for you) does not say you only have to have 6UN, 6UP and connected drive enabled to get CarPlay! It says you can only order 6CP in combination with navigation and navigation plus (so you can now order with smaller screen, which is good). It is not stated but obvious, it does not mean you can order an OTA subscription via connected drive just because you have 6UN or 6UP. - You still have to have ordered and paid for 6CP.

The problem you will probably have is that your car needs the WLan preparation as well as extended bluetooth (Carplay in BMW uses both to handle heavier data exchange between iOS device and car HU). Also, finally, BMW would not be able to get away with charging €300 for CarPlay preparation is they then allow cars with navigation plus and Bluetooth to order it anyway, I know for many cars , the only equipment difference will only be a €5 wlan aerial fitted into the car Head Unit (which you or any dealer can fit in 20 minutes) but it would reduce profit. I am sorry, it is disappointing, BMW should not make it this difficult, they are a premium company.

So if you have a basic head unit without navigation or wireless charging but comes with Connected Drive (meaning you can use Pandora radio etc.) BMW's answer is to buy a new car. Otherwise you're SOL

I might be interested in an Android display unit but they all seemed so unpolished and buggy; no automatic dimming, tiny complex icons, touch screen. If I wanted a fidgety touch screen unit to get smudgy fingerprints on it, I wouldn't buy a vehicle with iDrive in the first place.

The newer high end idrive systems are touch screen. I've spent some time with it and I found myself going back and forth between the screen and the knob depending upon the task. Some work better as touchscreen and others with the knob, it was an interesting experience and it made me wish the 2016 had released with a modern idrive system and not the old junky one that it has

My not so elegant solution

Since BMW will likely not have Apple Carplay retrofit and there's issue with voiding warranty plus the added cost of installing an aftermarket screen, I went the cheap route by installing a magnet mount for my iPhone X and a magnetic power cord.

The phone is always paired with Bluetooth to Connected drive. iDrive will let you change music on Pandora etc. The steering wheel button will activate Siri so you can get directions and navigation on the phone, etc.

As an added bonus, you can also select your phone's Bluetooth to broadcast navigation sound directly to the radio HU. It will automatically mute your music even if you're playing Sirius/FM/AM radio. The display will briefly show as if you're getting a phone call from your phone and then goes back to the prior screen automatically.

Has anyone fitted a MMI Plus unit on their X1 to enable CarPlay functionality?

What's the experience like?

I would expect so, but you can verify your build using a site such as bimmer.work with your VIN. If it shows 6CP (Apple CarPlay preparation), you're good to go. Our March 2019 build came with it included for one year.

We've just ordered a UK spec X1 for Sept build, including the Carplay option. The BMW configurator makes it clear that this option cannot be added after the car is built.

That's very weird, because this is actually one of the few options that CAN be added after build You can purchase it from the ConnectedDrive store if your car's hardware supports it.

Maybe some markets do not offer it after build, idk.

[broken record] If you do not have the correct supporting options there is no way to add CarPlay from the Connected Drive store and you're forced into a retrofit. You're saying "if your hardware support it" as if it's rare, but that's a much bigger group of cars than you think and the list of "missing options" that make adding it impossible are not well known.

Or the configurator may be wrong. For example, it lists the sliding bench seat as standard, and also as an extra cost option. On the pre-LCI it was standard, but on the LCI models it is an extra-cost option (in the UK at least). So I specified CarPlay to be sure.

Hi,
I have X1 F48 september 2017 with no navigation (6.5" screen, ID6).
Is it possible to:
1) Activate carplay on this HU?
2) Upgrade this basic media2 HU to navigation HU (with\or activate carplay), that is installed on 2019 X1 - I mean 8.8" touch screen and non-touch iDrive controller (for navigation). As I understand correctly - it is S06UN option.
3) Don't want to install NBT EVO, due to don't want to install HUD with new windshield and extended instrument cluster.

Are this partnumbers correct and enouth?
