I've got 5 miles before the 1200 mark.... Looking forward to redlining it And I'm gonna do the first oil change at 1500 miles.

I think you'd be okay to redline it now. It's not like the car will break.

This is a frequently debated topic (when to change oil), but for reference here's an oil analysis a member did on his second oil change

You are probably right Steve. But I can afford the $80 in supplies and I'll have fun doing it myself. Based on past threads here, the general consensus seems to be that doing it too often can only be a good thing, no harm done.

from what i have learned over the years from reading teck talk in roundel is that if you are going to keep the car a long time you should change the oil more frequently.

That's one of my favorite jokes..."I have to wait until 1200 miles before I can exceed 7000 RPM or 100 mph." My previous cars would have probably disintegrated if I did either. I'm actually not planning on doing either, though I suppose kickdown mode counts.

I think BMW knows best, but I believe the maintenance schedule is based on a business decision. I’m sure they had to balance additional wear vs. the cost of free maintenance.

5K interval – 50K miles = 10 oil changes @ $70 = $700
7.5K interval - 50K miles = 6 oil changes @ $70 = $420
15K interval - 50K miles = 3 oil changes @ $70 = $210

That adds up!

I remember talking to some local Taxi drivers a few years ago who religiously changed their oil every 4-5000 miles. Their cars went on to do high mileages sometimes well over 200,000. Whether the oil change had something to do with it or whether it was the fact the cars were in use all day every day I don't know, but it was an interesting conversation nonetheless.
