What big risks have paid off for you?

Left Big Pharma, went to a very small biotech with a drug still in development and unapproved. Helped to build it to over 300 people and cashed out with a 7-figure sum in 20 months.

Drove two hours away to meet a woman, and I wasn't sure what to expect. 15 years later, we're married and have a 9 year old.

Asked a female coworker out for dinner 3 separate times and she turned me down all 3 times. Asked her out 1 last time and told her if she turned me down again I would not ask her out again. I was bluffing. She said yes and we've been married now going on 46 years. Glad I was persistent.

Countervailing point:

I turned down quite a few opportunities to leave mega corp for the same type of opportunities that made some of you wildly successful. All of them went bust. Now I’m a deep six figure mega corp whore living a pretty easy life.

Risk management. Something to consider.

Cut out HS, starting earning great cash doing home repairs then parlaying that into 3 deckers (multi family homes) and other investments

Most people with money have investment properties in common, I just copied the smart successful types I worked for, no need to reinvent the wheel.

In the matter of about 2 weeks I decided to leave my ex who thought that I would stay no matter what BS she pulled, took a last minute college entry test and moved to Arizona for college.

Overall it worked out quite well as I met my wife of 30+ years while there and have had a long engineering career.
