HELP - Adding wiring to tow with my 2020 X1
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Heed someone for help please! I have a 2020 X1 and trying to figure out the wiring for the rear tail lights. For some reason my 2020 has only have 3 wires to each plug attached to eachtail light; Black/Yellow Gray/Purple and Solid Brown - exactly the same for the both left and right rear lights. I am also installing a Tekonsha Part #: 119190 to wiring protection but 4 wires are needed for the device to; stop, running lights, left and right signal but this 2020 X1 has only 3 wires on each side vs 4 wires on the ceach side in most videos I have seen before 2020. The 2017 install video I seen uses one more wire = 4. Here what my 202 X1 has: starting from left side on the SUV. 1 wire. Gray/Purple - looks like the tail light circuit / running lights. 2 wire. Black/Yellow - looks like the stop BUT I can also do the left signal and the hazards show voltage on the same wire. Is it possible BMW is using the same wire to 2 functions? stop and signal? 3 wire. Solid Brown - I have no idea what that one is for. As this point I need to know which wires I connect for the unit - running light, stop light, left signal and right signal from 3 wires I listed above. Anyone have any suggestions please. Thank you kindly, Dave |

This wiring diagram should help; brown colored wire is a ground connection:

Brink the towbar company (I think supply BMW OEM) have an excellent manual on how to fit their towbar lighting kit for the X1. That relates to the UK but you may find some of the content relevant. You can search for your vehicle, find towbar and electrics you want, and download the manual as a pdf. See https://brink.eu/en-int/
