I just have gone through the same , ended up buying a space saver wheel form a mercedes SLK R171/R172 , and a tire size of 155/80/17
The mercedes spare wheel fits the X1 perfectly, but you need to replace the mercedes tire with 155/80/17 |

When I specced my X1 back in early 2016 I went for non-runflat tyres and added the spare space-saver wheel and jack to the order. Cost was about £75 GBP. It was an option on the price list available to all models.

This is true for US market. The dealer I purchased from had no X1s with spares as they all came with RFTs. I was annoyed but couldn't do anything about it except get a spare after the fact.

On the US build site, there is an selection for "Space-Saver Spare" under the options tab, once you scroll down from the Packages. The cost is shown as $150 USD. You may be able to order it from the dealership, though I haven't tried myself so I can't say for sure.

BMW dealer in Sydney said they can not get it, cost me $50 for the wheel from a local wrecker and $20 for the tyre (commodore space saver is the correct size), so all up $70 and it fits perfectly.

I cannot have a spare wheel for my MSport Xdrive. There cannot be more than 2mm difference in tyre dia. as it affects the AWD and will cause damage due to different tyre wear.

The tire size is more critical when you have a rear wheel drive standard BMW

I have xDrive on my xLine, and I specced the space saver spare wheel when I ordered it. The handbook gives instructions on fitting the space-saver in the event of a puncture of the original, and the only warning is keeping your speed below 50mph. There is no indication that it shouldn't be used if you have the xDrive system.

Usually space-savers shouldn't be used with AWD systems, because you risk damaging them. Not sure about xDrive specifically, but for most AWDs that's true.
Why would you need space-saver anyways? There are modern repair kits. |

If it helps, I ordered my xDrive xLine 20i back in 2016, and I'm looking at the handbook from that time. The price list from that time, which I still have in PDF format, lists run-flat tyres as a £180 option available on *all* models (sDrive and xDrive) and also lists the "Space saver wheel with car jack (option code 300)" as a £75 option on *all* models. There's no distinction between sDrive and xDrive.
I wouldn't use one for an extended time, but it has seen use in the past on my car when we drive over a large bolt rattling around on the road that punched a hole through my regular tyre. It got us the couple of miles back home, and then the couple of miles to the tyre centre the next day. I don't know if a run-flat tyre would still have been usable for even those short distances with a 10-15mm hole in it, and even if it retained its approximate shape I'm pretty sure it would have been outside this 2mm circumference difference tolerance that's been mentioned above. I've not seen that tolerance mentioned in the handbook by the way... I'm happy to be corrected, but I'd also be concerned if BMW say that you shouldn't ever use a space saver with xDrive, as they listed it and sold it! |

Agreed, Jorix. But, many AWDs do have a space saver spare option or come with one from factory (e.g., Subarus). Using a space saver for a short drive at low speeds with it on the rear axle shouldn't be a problem. If it was, I doubt companies that sell mostly AWD models would even offer a spare.
There are limited scenarios where a spare, regular or full, would avoid getting stranded. I got TWO nails in my rear tire a few months back. One was too close to the sidewall to patch. Luckily it held enough air to get to a tire shop. I swapped on the spare to drive for a day(<10 miles) until the tire was replaced. Also, a patch kit wouldn't be of any good with a bent or cracked rim. |

Hopefully my recent email to BMW Uk will resolve my issue but it was not an option for my car at website configuration nor at purchase point according to dealer. BMW Uk I spoke to on the phone confirmed this. I look forward to the reply to my recent email to BMW.

Given the greater discrepancy in tire diameter, driving long term on spare isn't a good idea. |
