Should I feel bad for not getting navi ?
Hello guys,
I've just got a fairly new BMW X1, nov 2019 build (owned for 2 months now, got it at 5k km ) I'm loving the car - coming from an old Opel Corsa it's quite the upgrade One thing bugs me though, and I kinda get a bit FOMO due to it - I don't have navigation on it. Do you think that it's a big loss, or should I not stress about it ? I currently am waiting for a phone mount (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001...18db6b3cyu2H3r) that would allow me to place my phone more front and center for nav purposes, and also I'm helping on a project (https://github.com/hufman/AndroidAutoIdrive) that plans to add some kind of navi "casting" via the ConnectedDrive Apps platform. So while I do have alternatives, do you think I'm missing out being without the navi, or am I better off with the classic duo of Google Maps and Waze ? |

You're not missing out, in my opinion. Google maps and Waze have much more user friendly interfaces. In my 2 years of ownership, I've used the car's native navigation system twice only because I had no signal at all on my phone. You'll get more useful route information with the phone apps, too.
If you live in remote areas where you don't get good cell data service, BMW's navi may come in handy. |

I have a 2020 X1 and it came with the navi. I use it sometimes and I have to say Google map on my phone is much better. The only reason sometimes I use the BMW navi is because it has full screen while the Google map on my phone can only show half screen via Carplay.
If my car did not come with the navi and I had to pay to get it, I would say no. I am waiting bimmercode to add full screen Carplay then I can ditch the BMW navi completely... |

As much as I hate the BMW Nav, it's full screen and more importantly in the HUD if you have it, no 3rd party nav shows in the HUD |

Yes you reminded me another reason to use the BMW navi. I don't have HUD but I can see the direction guidance and the speed limit sign on my dashboard if I use the BMW navi.

If it's not too much, add navigation. You won't be sorry.

You will be fine without Navi. I bout the one without Navi but it has driving assistance package which I find it useful. I use "Here we go" map which you can use off line before Google can be used off line. Now you can download and use Google map but it might not support all countries. You need to check out at your place. Abt the phone Mount I am using iottie wireless charging mount I bought from Amazon. I am also using thinkware u1000 dashcam if u r thinking of using one.

Just my 2¢ — the only redeeming benefit of the BMW nav is that directions can be displayed on HUD (if you have it). Otherwise, in terms of latest up-to-date routing, Google or Waze are better

Both my phone and key fob stays in my pockets while I am in the car. BMW Nav works well for me, including showing traffic. Unnecessary hassle to use phone on short trips.
FOMO and car resale value do apply. Regardless, it is too late for OP to overthink this now. |

While not a necessity, I like the navigation when used with heads up display. Pretty good at showing you when you are approaching a turn
Also like that you can program the preset buttons to a destination. For example, you can program Preset 1 button to home. Pretty neat when you’re lost or on the road and don’t want to fart around with your phone or don’t have good cell signal. Just press “1” and you’re on your way. |

I have used BMW Navigation for many years. I would disagree that it is crap. I would say in its defence that all you have to do is use it, set up the options as you want them, and learn how it works and it is a great tool. More so if you have RTTI in your country.

I live in a pretty congested area and if I plug a destination into the BMW, Apple, and Google navigation ecosystems, Apple and Google will give me the fastest taking traffic into account, and reroute mid-trip if needed, the BMW system gives me a longer congested trip that while technically is the "easiest" it can be 2x as long. If I'm planning a long trip between cities that lasts more than an hour, then it's a toss up, so it's cities that the BMW is letting me down on. In 2.5 years this has been consistent behavior for me. |

Thanks for the replies guys - seems that I ain't missing out on much. Google Maps/Waze/HereWeGo it is.
I plan on getting an Android Wear/Tizen smartwatch soon enough, so that should make life a bit easier with indications on the wrist. I don't have HUD on my car, so that's not something I would benefit from anyway. |

It does! Many US vehicles are just basic with some versions having halogen lights. BMW just produce a lot with US basic configurations to fill a boat for the crossing from Europe. Hence the wording of " bought off the lot" whereas in the UK we order and configure it ourselves and pay the deposit" except where the car is a so called "demonstrator" or other fancy wording for supply to BMW employees.
