BMW F48 Auto Transmission
Hi guys, first post here!
We are in the UK and have just purchased a 2018 X1 xDrive20d Sport Auto from a used car dealer. We test drove it at a low and medium speed, everything seemed to be fine, and we were happy with the car, so we went ahead and purchased it. We drove it home 200 miles, however during the drive home, I began to notice that the gearbox wasn't changing up and down as I'd expected. At a low-ish speed for example approaching a roundabout, the car would feel like it changes down, and then all of a sudden jerks forward with a loud thud. When pulling away it does something similar, when you push the accelerator, it doesn't respond straight away, rather it waits a second then lurches forward, again with a loud thud. I also noticed when I got it home, I put it into reverse to back into the drive, and then pressed the accelerator, the car didn't respond/move. I put it back into P and then back into R, and a second later the car lurched backwards with the loud thud sound again. The car still has just shy of 1 year BMW warranty on it, but I wanted to know if anyone has any advice on what to do here please? It's not viable to drive the car back to the dealer, and to be honest, I quite like it so I want to keep it, but would like to have this investigated/repaired, but not quite sure how to take this forward. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you all for your time in advance! |

It is imperative you notify the selling dealer immediately - see https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.u...20most%20cases and plenty of similar. I would both ring (to show you want to be reasonable) and write (to provide evidence if it comes to it). He ought to agree to you sorting it through your local BMW dealer, but beware the official BMW warranty says "Your warranty may become invalidated if you continue to drive your vehicle when a fault becomes apparent". So I would contact your local dealer too. Good luck.

I forgot to say. Welcome to the forum. Please do not forget to post any progress you make, because there are many people joining this and other BMW forums asking for advice and not posting the resolution to the problem.

You don’t say in your post whether you bought the X1 from a BMW dealer but, if not, have you seen any info re official BMW service history, because that may be an important factor in having any faults rectified. The service history can be seen in the car, on the main iDrive screen, by going into (1) My Vehicle (2) Vehicle Status (3) Service Requirements (4) Service History, where any performed maintenance will be shown. In my car it shows the date of the PDI inspection (3/18) and the first service mileage and date of the service (9/19). I think you will probably need to satisfy yourself any required service that may have become due has been carried out, which should satisfy any BMW dealer that the warranty requirements have been complied with. The responses already posted should be of great help to you and I too hope you soon have a fully ‘enjoyable’ X1. 🤞 |

This system of having the service history on the idrive can be miss leading. When ours had its first Oil Service the pdi dropped out of the screen. Our dealer explained this often occurs. (its on email,i have photo of the previous data ). At the same time the Vechicle check said 15,000 mile before the service BUT said 19,000 miles after the service. Seems it get automatically reset to the next oil service.
Reference gearbox ---- Its very rare I feel the gears change |

Many of the later gearboxes are like this. Not just BMW but my previous Audi Quattro Q5 was.
If the OPs problem is as acute as he says it is, he has a problem that needs solving quickly. Hence my answer to contact nearest BMW dealer for advice.

I will not repeat advice already given but could be a faulty oxygen sensor or an issue with EGR, both are known (but rare) Issues. If you have not already done so, you could try A throttle recalibrate, Steps... 1) hit start button once to turn on power (Don't start the engine) 2) then press the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec 3) then hit start button once to turn off power (do not put foot on brake pedal). 4) then remove foot from accelerator 5) then wait for 2 minutes 4) then start the engine like normal and see if that helps with the jerk and acceleration hesitation |

I suspect this is something that requires dealer diagnosis and remediation -- I guess (and hope) that's possible, given you just purchased the car!!
The process below is, as I was told by a BMW tech, the TCU 'reset' procedure for the Aisin 8AT, which is -- like most modern TC A/Ts -- a 'learning' transmission that 'adapts' to your driving style. All the process does is reset the transmission to its ex-factory settings for change points etc. I reset ours once or twice per year because we (especially my wife) tend to use the car for longer distance, mostly motorway driving. So it becomes a little 'reluctant' in its downchanges (as well as upchanging early) -- good for economy, of course ...but a pain when you start using the car around town in traffic. When I notice this, I do the reset and you'll certainly notice the difference. Quote:

Hey guys, thank you all for your quick and kind responses!
Update: We figured out that our warranty includes BMW Assist, so we called them and had a technician come out to the house/car and take a look. He put it on their own specialist diagnostics reader, and the fault memory on the car showed a problem with gear shift between 2 and 3 and 7 and 8, and also in R, exactly the same symptoms as I experienced. The technicians diagnostics machine advised to replace transmission, so he advised to take it to a local retailer which I did this morning. They will diagnose and repair, and have very kindly arranged a hire car for me. Will post an update here when they tell me what's going on/what needs to be repaired/replaced |

Thanks for the update — yes, the 'bang' you mentioned seemed well beyond a TCU reset to me! I do hope this is all covered under warranty or by BMW, and that your new (to you) car is returned in the great working order you expected.

Hey there, sorry for the delay in getting back. BMW concluded their tests and agreed that the entire transmission needs to be replaced. They ordered a brand new one from Germany and fitted it all under warranty. Great service from the local dealer, really happy (and lucky!) it was covered by warranty. Not a cheap fix, they said the gearbox was just over £10k plus labour to fit it!

Absolutely agree. I did this on my previous X3 and had £100 excess that reduces the cost to a manageable price. The nice thing is that it normally (UK) includes the BMW breakdown cover with all the enhancements of replacement car of the same type etc.
