Front shock absorber dust cover

Hi guys, has any of you replaced the above? If so, how hard is it? I noticed today that both front dust covers are split. Not sure why, car is a 2016 F48. Could it be due to age? Thanks

Shock would have to come out.

You can buy some coil over covers and fit them as an alternative. Some people do this to for example on the i8.

Pretty common issue on BMW dust covers they drop down from the top fitting after hitting a big pothole and then get crushed.

Yes, you need to remove the entire shock to replace that, and it isn't easy. It's the same process you will do to install lowered springs.

I'm attaching some ISTA docs for your reference, but actually, you don't need to follow that to remove it. There are other techniques to force down the entire bearing hub. That is what I did when I installed the lowered springs. Take a look at these videos:

No they have super strong Velcro, zipper or lace up down the back.

I have the adaptive suspension on my 2017 f48 which also has split strut boots, does it mean it’s a different job to replace the boots please?
