Wait... does Toyota realize that EV's don't really need a transmission? It's probably just a joystick to play racing video games on an infotainment screen...

pump in fake noise. adjust battery torque to mimic an internal combustion engine. fake tachometer on the dash to see the revs climbing with the noise. shifter, clutch, throttle and brake by wire managed by the ecu.

lol i wonder if they can mimic a bad heel-toe shift or stall off the line

If you read the patent materials, that is exactly what it is, a faked manual transmission experience.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

They need to throw in a simulated gear crunch noise every few thousand miles too, just to keep you honest.

On one hand I applaud the #SaveTheManuals aspect of this, but on the other hand, I have a feeling not only would this be an extremely limited market (I doubt the 3% of Manual Buyers want an EV) but the feel of a manual would not be there. The thing with a manual is that its not just about the transmission, but the engine is an important pairing to the transmission as well. The experience of revving out a motor across its gears, downshifting, building torque, heel-toe shifting, or hell even stalling will be hard to mimic with that of an EV motor which already produces its power immediately with no change in sound or feeling.

No worries. They'll eventually drop it for a manumatic anyway since those are easier in heavy traffic.

Wait...

If my car sim can make this enjoyable with a fake car, it is doable.

I would want to try it before passing judgment.
