1.8i or 1.8d

This is my choice for a March delivery.

I invite your views. I imagine the 1.8i is quieter, but I am tempted by the diesel's 10bhp advantage.

I had the same sport automatic transmission on my previous F20 and loved it.

All opinions welcome.

The transmission in the F48 is Aisin 8 sp ? still very good, but not as good as the ZF in the F20. As for diesel vs petrol, I've shifted to the latter

Correct. Still a well rated Auto but not quite ZF.

OP are you making longer or shorter trips? If shorter I'd go petrol.

I fully agree - Aisin is not on par with ZF.

My reading is that 1.8i and/or 1.8d has the new 7-speed dual clutch!? Obviously that DCT is a low torque gearbox. Generally DCT:s have a problem with low speed driving - otherwise OK- apart from some early VW boxes.

Since July all FWD X1s come with a DCT 7-speed auto gearbox.
Until then the 18i (that I Know since I own one) came with a 6-speed AISIN.
I am very pleased with the 6-speed AISIN and with the small 3cylinder B38 engine.

Many thanks for all of your replies. I will be going for a test drive in a 1.8i on Tuesday and I will let you know how I get on.

If Aisin - check no of gears - rumour says it´s 8 - not 6.

What model line are you going for?

The 18i is considerably cheaper than the 18d so leaves you more room for options if you are happy with the power on offer....

Have you considered the 20i? It's a little dearer than the 18d but I can definately recommend this engine for it's power and refinement

Thanks for the reply.

I would love a 20i, but my budget won't stretch this far.

Just wondering if you ever managed the test in the 18i? Im finding it very difficult to get one at the dealers for a test drive.

I’m strongly considering in for a replacement for my current Audi Q3 1.4 tfsi. My only concern is that it will be down on power - 140bhp against 150bhp and impact on acceleration when overtaking. Ideally would like a 20i but need a manual as other family will be driving.

Thanks

Hello Pganders,

Thanks for your question.

No I am not going to bother testing the 1.8i.

The reason I am going for the 1.8d is very similar to your own, I have an Audi A3 1.4TFSI and I would appreciate the extra 10 bhp for overtaking.

In some of my earlier posts there was a respondent from Greece who drove a 1.8i so you could try to get his opinions.

Thanks for replying so quickly. I do have a nagging feeling that the 18i engine is just too underpowered for the X1. Now if it were the Audi 1.4 I would have no worries but just don’t want to end up with a less responsive Car than I already have. Diesel doesn’t suit my type of journeys otherwise might myself have gone down that route.

Think I’ll have to wait for the dealer getting a 18i in to test or bite the bullet and go for a 20iauto. Having seen a number of low mileage reg cars under £30k it is tempting.

Good luck with your 18d.

These days you really need to go out there and test drive. It's nearly impossible to tell from the numbers.

10 years ago it was pretty simple. You had a 2.0 normally aspirated petrol vs 2.0 turbo diesel. You could choose better top end power vs low end torque. The diesel was always more expensive and depending on the mileage it would eventually pay for the difference with better fuel economy.

These days you have all these small displacement turbo petrol engines. Some are better than others.

Or you get a 18i and stick a tuning box on it...

Might be worth investigating - has anybody tried it yet with this engine?

Thanks

Just had a very brief look, the racechip box takes you to 176bhp

Had a look at their web site. Looks impressive though I suspect once fitted the BMW warranty is voided. I see though Racechip include a 2 year third party engine warranty for whatever that’s worth.

I’m thinking maybe if the 18i doesn’t feel powerful enough then just go for the 20i. Some research to be done!!

The beauty of tuning boxes are that you can fit/remove them quickly and they are undetectable. So as long as you remove it whenever it goes for a service they don’t know you’ve had it fitted, therefore they can’t deny warranty claims....

Getting very tempting and I see they offer an option for the 20i which they claim increases HP to 246hp 😉

yeah seen that, the only reason I haven’t put one on our 20i is that it’s primarily my wife’s car. The only time I drive it is with the whole family on board, so not worth the investment...
