18s or 19s for winter... with a caveat

So, ordered my X1 M Sport with those sexy 19" summers... need a set of winters and read every single article I can find about downsizing for winter.

Mostly the arguments seem to be narrower tire width the better, BUT the difference on tire rack for 18's and 19's are:

225/45 19
or
225/50 18
even the 17's
225/55 17

with 225mm being the width of the tire that means these tires are essentially identical except the side walls are smaller on the 19's. Does that afford me any benefit in the snow at all?

The other reason I ask is because I found a set of aftermarket 19's I want to buy as winters for now but might switch to summers eventually...

thoughts?

I run the Continental TS 830P Ultra High Performance winter tires on my x25D on 19inch wheel. I must admit it's a top tire and have the benefit to keep my sexy 19 wheels.. I'm not sure it's sold in the US though.

Taller profile provides much better pot hole protection. Went with 17s.
