Pano sunroof - to get or not to get?
hi all
am considering a new X1 or X2 and wondering whether to get a sunroof. Could peeps please share their experiences, esp in terms of: 1. rattles 2. additional wind noise (when sunroof is closed) 3. heat buildup in the car (even when blind is closed) many thanks

The main thing I'm worried about is that very thin blind letting in too much heat in summer even when it's closed...

Where I am in Australia, it gets very hot (>40°C) in summer, but we've found the X1 to be no more hot than our previous BMW without sunroof. The blind seems to work well, and the sunroof means you can quickly rid the car of hot air, too

I had a friend ride with me recently who commented on how much more open the pano sunroof made the vehicle feel. He had ridden in a rental X1 that didn't have a pano and he said it made the car feel smaller compared to mine.
I don't feel that the pano panels are any louder than a vehicle with a traditional sunroof or metal roof. I have only had mine a few months so I haven't done a summer with it yet, so I can't speak for the heat buildup compared to other vehicles. There is a feature on mine that you can set up parked car ventilation for a set time during the day that's supposed to help cut the heat down. I think it works via ConnectedDrive as well, but I don't have that option here. I would imagine there's some variation in the markets for those features. So far I've been happy with my pano sunroof. I like how large it is, and I appreciate the fact that BMW made it as big a glass roof as they did. I looked at a couple of other cars that had pano sunroofs that were much smaller in size. |

I love the pano roof and it's one of the few reasons I bought the X1 over a V60CC. You can add tinting to the sunroof which greatly helps with the incoming heat factor even with the lining open. I don't think I've ever driven with the lining closed as long as there wasn't snow on the top of the car.
My only issue was a creak, which I finally identified was the center support car on a specific lip. I glued on some fuzzy side of velcro and the creaking has gone away. No regrets as it relates to the pano roof. As a footnote in 2016 in the US it was pretty much a mandatory accessory due to the package structure. Last edited by landrumdh; 02-11-2020 at 12:31 PM.. |

We have the pano sunroof on our X1 and I have a smaller sunroof on our f30. When open or when the shade is pulled back it makes the cars more open. The X1 sunroof is of course much bigger and definitely makes the car feel more spacious. In Louisiana in the summer it is regularly over 100 F, with interior temps still hotter. I don't think the cars get any hotter with the shade closed than if there was just a roof present (i.e no sunroof). The benefit of having the sunroof is that it allows you to cool the car quicker when you open the roof to let the hot air out. That is at least our experience.

Honestly this is one of the main reasons I got this SUV over others after checking out most of the SUV in the 20k plus minus range, especially compared to the X2. X1's extra large pano glass makes this something that extra special.

Dont know about BMW but VW had a lot of trouble with them squeaking and leaking. Never used mine in the Tiguan and didn't want one in the X1. If I lived in a hot climate might have been different.

The creaky leaky VW pano roof problem was limited to Golfs in North America, fortunately, and the sunroof in our Tiguan was fantastic. Even bigger than the X1.
I love sunroofs precisely because I don’t live in a hot country, so opening up the roof is something I can do frequently. I rarely close the shade, even in summer, so even on days when I can’t open the roof there’s still an open feeling to the cabin. |

That said, I've concluded it's unnecessary. I guess if you left the blind open on a really hot day, you'd deserve the burnt nether regions; as long as you use the shade, open the roof to quickly expel hot air, and keep the climate control on "auto", I've never found the X1 any more or less hot in Summer than any other car I've had, and much cooler than the black sports coupe I had for a couple of years.

The suggestions seem to be 5% mirror tint and leave the shade open on hot days when the vehicle is parked to avoid the temperature differential issue (if that is a problem in reality). I'd be interested in how well the sunroof + shade reduce or eliminate the UV. While some may say if you don't want a sunroof don't buy a vehicle with it, but of course the high end models often you don't have a choice. |

I too had heard/read that tinting the sunroof panels could result in cracks. I think because the glass tries to expand as it gets hot but can't expand because of the confines of the sunroof frame. When you tint side windows or even back windscreen there's probably more expansion space....
Anyway...now I bought an X3 that came with pano roof. Yup the car gets hot, even when the outside temp was only 25c but sunny. And the X3's sunroof blind is more dense than the X2's.
