Hill hold

Found this in handbook. This negates the need for Autohold as a separate item.

I was disappointed the X1 didn't have Autohold but it seems it has an alternative.

Driving off with drive-off
assistant
1. Hold the vehicle in place by depressing the foot brake.
2. Release the foot brake and drive off without delay.
The vehicle is held for approximately 2 seconds after the foot brake has been released.
Depending on the vehicle's load or when towing a trailer, the vehicle may roll backwards a little.

Autohold was in my Tiguan. On a hill if you pressed the brake it would keep the pressure on the brakes when you lifted your foot off, this was done by the ABS pump. It would hold this for a while but then the electronic handbrake took over to prevent the ABS pump overheating.
The engine had to be running. Switch off and eleectric handbrake took over.

This Drive Off Assistant certainly works seamlessly - there's a few hills around town that it's noticeable that the car stays still while you move your foot from brake to accelerator. It also works when pointing downhill, and moving from Drive to Reverse; the car stays in place before you put your foot on the accelerator to reverse back up a hill.

The other handy electronic handbrake feature I use is to apply the handbrake while stopped at traffic lights, but remain in Drive. You don't need to keep your foot on the footbrake (dazzling the driver behind you...) and you don't need to disengage the handbrake when the lights change; just put your foot on the accelerator and the car releases it for you as you pull away.

I've had some awful experiences with electronic handbrakes in a couple of hire cars in years gone by, a Land Rover Discovery and a Peugeot something or other. The X1 one seems far more intuitive than those, but that was a few years ago so maybe things have improved...

Around here that results in people being hit from behind because the car behind thinks they are going to move forwards. Totally the driver from behind fault, however it's instigated by the front driver. I know somebody who has been the driver that hit the other driver in these accidents....

Really??!!
That's how I always drive my other, manual cars — handbrake on, in neutral, foot off brake pedal. Was taught to do this, too, as a young learner.
As you say, the accident is the fault of the driver behind, who was probably texting 🙄😳

A lack of auto hold is my biggest disappointment with this vehicle. I know you can use the electronic brake, however this is nowhere near as smooth as the auto hold in previous E70 & F10...

Just tried the hold for 2 mins and it does work. With the auto box and this facility theres no need for autohold for me.
