18 inch Run Flats

Hello everyone,

I will be placing an order for my X1 next week, but I would appreciate some tyre advice.

I think the 567 18 inch looks great, but are these really very undesirable with run flat tyres?

Only thing is that I make 6, regular 140 mile journeys to Mid Wales every year and this area is not good for mobile coverage. In this situation a run flat would be very useful just to head for the nearest town without changing a wheel.

All opinions are appreciated.

I have 18" RFTs fitted to our 25i. The ride is fine (we also have EDC). In my test drives, I found the 19" RFTs made the ride pretty harsh, hence the decision to run smaller wheels/tyres

There should be an option for getting non RFT (I had to pay $150 for the spare tire). The ride should be better and for driving long distance after getting a flat the spare tire is actually better (the speed limitation is the same as RFT but you can drive much farther).

18” RFT + EDC owner here.

Pros:

- Comfortable ride in Comfort Drive Mode with EDC. Obviously not as soft as standard tyres on 18” or 17” wheels. But still way softer than 19”.

- MASSIVE under boot floor space (because there’s no spare tyre). Big enough for two small carryons!

- More convinient to just drive to a service centre or tyre supplier than to wait for roadside assistance!

Cons:

- Noisier than standard tyres due to stiffer side walls. Noticeable at motorways/A-roads speeds and on old rough asphalt. Not a big deal in the city.

- More expensive than standard tyres.

- Harsh ride in Sport Mode if you have EDC, although you can customise this via iDrive and disable any change in suspension setting. Defies its purpose!! But hey, it’s still an option!

Conclusion: extra boot space alone makes it worthwhile in my opinion. Go for it, if you have easy access to service centres or tyre suppliers.

This was extensively discussed on X3/X4 sites a year or so ago.

Two main groups:
-RFT: peace of mind
-non-RFT: comfort and performance.

Non-RFT:s: - me included - "carry a set of slime/sealent+ repair kit+ 12V compressor".
Most punctures can be repaired with slime only, but preassurized can with slime is not good enough - hence compressor.

Set at Amazon, BMW and others.

Here in the UK I have a 20i M-Sport with 18" Non-RFTs. The kit you mention was already included with the car when I bought it from new. It is at the back of the under-floor space in the boot.
Is it not included in Sweden?

I think there was also an option to pay for a space-saving spare.

I wanted to describe options and consequencies as previously discussed in another thread. Currently I have - as can be seen - X4 - waiting for X2 M35i to be released.

Pirelli Sottozero II XL AO versus run flats?

I have just purchased an X1 and should be receiving it sometime in the next four week. I live in Switzerland and so I will need winter tires. In an effort to be organized, I went a head and purchased a set online. Turns out that I made an error and didn't click the run flat option which I had been planning to. Long story short, I now have a set of Sottozero II XL, which I can't return (don't get me started on Swiss consumer protection). So here is my question, should I bite the bullet, eat the cost, and order run flats or should I just get an emergency wheel and stick with what I've got? Anyone have experience of Sottozero II regular tires on an X1 and are there any issues I should be aware of? Thanks
