Buy vs. Lease F48 X1
As the title states I am torn between the two, would really like to buy this X1. I feel like you are just asking for it trying to keep a BMW for 8+ years.
Engine not being naturally aspirated concerns me on longevity - 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, 16-valve 228-hp engine. Combines a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic) and high-precision direct injection. Overall all the bells and whistles always concern me, LED in the front and rear headlights, oil cooler, HPFP & water pump. I just don't know if I want to be a part of the huge repair bills. As this is a new chasis being the guinea pig could prove to be costly on an unproven model. Would sDrive 28i be a better option than the xDrive 28i as far as transmission since the xDrive is somewhat front wheel with a variable kick in AWD (still need to read more on this)? Any help/thoughts are appreciated!

BMW offers the BMW Extended Service Contract for folks who want piece of mind up to 7 years after purchase. BMW offers several different service levels of extended warranty, so you can just cover the powertrain or you can cover additional stuff too.
IMHO and IME if you're keeping any BMW for more than 8 years you're taking a risk. Modern BMWs are very expensive to repair. For comparison my 650i started having occasional mechanical issues late in year 8 (she's almost 10 now) and my '06 650i has a comparatively simple naturally aspirated V8, manual shifter, and rear wheel drive. In retrospect it would have saved quite a bit of money if I had traded her in a couple of years ago. She's still a hoot to drive though.

My thoughts exactly. I know that it will get expensive over the years. Plus I have owned and leased BMWs for the better part of a decade and still favor leasing b/c I am a car nut. I would like to think this F48 Sdrive 28i may be better to own than my F30 335i would be. Maybe I am just trying to convince myself...
The thing I do love is the 4 year 50K mile warranty and maintenance, I know you pay for it, but the Hondas/Mazdas/Toyotas of the world do not provide. With BMW you have just the payment and that is it, whether you lease or buy (assuming paid off in 3-4 years).

In my experience, and subject to your taxation/ work situation, a lease works well for 3-4 years. Thereafter, it tends to be much more expensive than purchasing, with a risk that you'll find yourself underwater in trying to meet the residual payment (balloon).
Whatever method you choose (and you should look at the numbers carefully), you should also organise warranty coverage to match the period of ownership, as stated above.

I'm thinking about going bare bones - alpine white xDrive, black sensatec, no packages and then add in 19 wheels, Harmon/kardon and space saver spare - no nav to break, no sunroof to break and leather won't wear out since its leatherette.
That scenario is if I buy as I will keep it 6-8 years. I would 100% get rid of the car sub 100k depending on how it acted. I guess all of this is subject to how good of SAV this was through the first 4 years 50k miles. |

For those who have had experience with BMW turbo engines, can you please share your opinion on the durability of such?
Mine is not turbo and there has been no issues at all. Wonder if the same holds for turbo (which is the norm these days). Thanks. |

^^^ I have had both an n54 335i and an n55 335i. The power of the n54 was unmatched in the n55 however I had way more problems with the n54 and the HPFP. That said is is a completely different b46 engine. Side note, I did not have any problems in the first 3 years of the n55 f30.
I am not sure there is enough data in BMWs to make this call, however I'm pretty sure this has been used for a bit longer with Mini Cooper.
