There should be no codes ever when switching tires unless for some reason you did not match the rolling diameters of them. The stock offset is something like +42. +25 means it is 17mm pushed further away/out from the wheel. This helps with the width, but also pushes my wheels out past the fenders. It makes it a little like a mini truck. Not so crazy ridiculous but different. And no, there is no rubbing on anything.

The best tool I use to do the calculations is the website: willtheyfit.com It's an awesome tool where you can plug in your before and after ( wheel size, offset, tire profile diameter etc), it'll give you pictures and measurements of the differences in size. There are tons of similar calculators online but I like that the most.

Thanks for sharing the website!

Oh you got 19s. I was thinking you have 20s too. I've reached out to someone at BMWNA, hope to have info I can share by next week

Sure thing! 20's vs 19's remember don't mean a thing. Think about it this way: The car is going to roll the same way and the speedometer works the same no matter what SIZE wheel you put on. HOWEVER if you mess up the calculations you can screw that all up completely. The point is the 19" has more rubber and less "rim". The 20" has less rubber and more "rim" . The outside circle that you see at the edge of the tire is the SAME. So when talking about the width of the tire at 255mm it is the same width no matter what size wheel. And unless you mess with the profile wrong, it will have exactly the same clearance as any other wheel. The only difference would be if the rim itself is too small it will hit your brakes, otherwise if all other specs are the same.. then it is really the same tire.

Agree. My aim is to stay as close to the stock diameter as possible. My choices for A/S is either a 235/40 or 245/35 or even 255/35. Of those the 255 option seems closest with a 0.22% error. The 235 option has a 1.2% error which I can live with. I just want to avoid any problems with rubbing or the car throwing codes.

Yes so given a 225 stock width vs a 255 width the difference is 30mm divided by two which is 15mm wider in the inside and 15 on the outside which is no problem at all. This is again assuming you're using the same stock tire..a very easy calculation. Go outside with a ruler to set your mind at ease. You'll see there's tons and tons of clearance.

What's the tolerance for circumference/diameter? +-X%?

Honestly as long as all the tires match you can do whatever you want. In general when people are getting new tires they want to be around 3% difference but anything under 5 is acceptable. It really only throws off your odometer and speedometer. That and of course if you go so big it rubs everything.

Going to a 245/35 or 255/35 works either way from an overall diameter, but also take in consideration of the width of your wheel as you don't want to "over-tire" the wheel. Not all, but most 255 have a starting recommended minimum wheel width of 8.5.

Funny, just joined the forum. Picked up my X2 M35i last week with Goodyear’s and yes, not impressed... previously had a first gen Z4 and always put Eagle F1s on it (non RFT) because they were awesome. Then had an E92 M3 Coupé originally with PSSs (good) then PS2s (not good) then PS4s (awesome). Now looking for winter wheel/tyre options and eventually replacement summers once the F1s are dead.

Thanks! Just needed a +- number and looks like I will be well within the 3% tolerance. Not going crazy wide with 265 so I should be okay

Good point. Not going 255 but likely try and stay safe with 235/40 20s so should be safe

BTW still inconclusive (to me) about the spare. Person I reached out to at BMWNA says the spare “steel Black wheel” Part # 36 11 6 851 507 shows it will work with sport brakes. Will ask the service department to dry fit the wheel when I go for my first oil change/service before I commit. I'd hate to buy the wheel and find out it won't fit. Otherwise I guess my option is to buy a single cheap 18" rim and tire as a spare. My only (major) complaint with that is it'll eat up a lot of my already small cargo area

Well I'm just going to go ahead and put 235/40 A/S tires on my 20" rims. Hopefully (it shouldn't) it doesn't throw a code. I can live with the slight ~1% speedo deviation. At least I can drive the car in the winter and won't have to bother with the ol' summer/winter switch in April and December.

Still in a bind about the spare tho...

How did the 235/40/20's go? I'm in the same boat with our X2 that have the summer pirrelli run flats. Need A/S for our weather...

What brand did you go with?

I see Kaltire doesn't care any 235/40/20 size tires.

On the other hand, tire rack carries 235/40/20 Michellin pilot sport A/S and the highest rated out of 4 tested tires. I'm likely going to get these to replace the 20" run flats that BMW put on so they wouldn't have to supply a spare and sell winter tires to boot. Shame on BMW...

Sweet!
Any rubbing or codes thrown? Sounds like no issues. This is on the stock 20" rims?

No rubbing, no codes, no issues. The car actually rides noticeably better. Yes, original 20 inch wheels.

Went with Conti 255/35 and here's the result. Was told one of my rims was bent. Not too badly but bent nonetheless. Thanks to our roads in North Jersey

How do you know??

How do you know if your tires are good for winter driving? Most people can't answer that question, how can they? I could say my all seasons are great, but until I try a winter tire on that exact car I have no idea. They might be great compared to your two wheel drive truck, but they might total crap compared to any other tire on your all wheel drive car. How do you know??

man - those look pretty nice. And loads of room. Now I'm sort of wishing I went with the 20's (I got 19's since I needed A/S - and also wanted to try DDC).

BMW's selling 20's in matte black. Pricey (crazy) but B/A looking I think.

Hi all

Just picked up 2022 x2 m35i with 20s. Today I tried fitting the conti’s extreme contact 245/40r20 with the original rims and it was rubbing. Is the key to go with 35mm sidewall? I’m not sure what am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Gene
