F48 roof bars
Greetings all. I was wondering if anyone here has the roof bars and can comment on rather they produce a lot of wind noise. I had them on my previous gen X11 and ended up taking them off between uses because of the excessive wind noise they created. Any thought or ideas are appreciated.

I have the BMW crossbars with the little spoilers in the front. If you perfectly measure everything as per the manual, they don't make much noise. Unfortunately they are too close together, then, to carry most items. For our roof box, we had to move the rear crossbar further back. Now it whistles.

I have the BMW OEM bars, wind noise begin to be noticeable at 80KM/H as a slight whistle and progressively gets louder as speed increases. Nothing unmanageable at 120, although I suspect it'll be much lower once you go over a certain speed threshold, I haven't gotten a chance to push the car yet.
Btw, if you don't have a glass roof, I suspect you won't hear much noise. |

Thule square roof bars
After getting the new X1 a few weeks ago, I bought a pair of Thule square roof bars to clamp our old roofbox onto for a week away in Wales. The roofbox U-clamps were only about 42mm across, so the Thule Wingbar was too wide and it had to be the square bars...
In case anyone needs any part details, they are as follows:
Here a some pictures of the bars and the roofbox in situ. I can't really comment on the noise of the bars on their own as I only drove with the roof box on. It all seemed fairly solid, the clamps have a rubber pad that grips onto the rails. I took the whole lot off when we returned as they aren't the most attractive accessory |

I have the Thule rapid podium 460R (Aeroblade) setup on mine. there is some noise at higher speeds, but not bad. The faring might quiet it down even further. it worked well on my last vehicle with the square bars to nearly eliminate the whistle

So the Thule ones work? I'm looking to do a roof mounted bike rack, 2 bikes. Any suggestions for part numbers that are compatible would be greatly appreciated. I thought BMW would have their own out by now.

BMW have a X1 specific rail and then list their regular Racing or Touring bike racks for it

You can't beat the price of the BMW OEM bars for the X1, got an excellent deal from sun motors. Wind noise is manageable. Main thing to be aware of with aftermarket bars is potentially how low they sit if you have the panoramic sunroof. With the OEM bars there's not a ton of clearance when open, the aftermarket bars are typically lower. I need to get shorter screws for my Yakima snowboard rack as the current screws will scratch the sunroof when open.

Roof bars update
It's a year since the last post on this one but maybe someone can help me update my roof bars. I had a 2019 3 series touring for which I had and still have the Thule square roof bars with the 4 feet clamps and locks. I've just changed the car for an F48 X1 and want to get the roof bars in use hopefully without buying all new. So can I still use the square bars and just update the feet clamps. Clive L posted a helpful list of Thule parts needed. Can I remove my old feet clamps from the bars and just buy replacement ones? If I can do that do I need the Thule 753 and the 4023? I've looked at the Thule website but can't figure whether or not I need both, or just one. Any help gratefully received. Thanks

The Thule feet are two separate parts for the X1; the foot itself (753) slides into the slot in the roof bar at the top, and the clamp (4023) then attaches to the bottom of the foot. I don't have a lot of experience with the Thule gear; only what I looked into before buying the bits for my X1. But according to the Thule site the 753 foot, and the 4023 clamp kit is also for any 3 Series Touring from 2012 onward. The difference is they say that the roof bar for the 3 Series Touring is the 761 (120cm long) and the X1 requires the 769 (127cm). So that could be a problem. Can you clarify your 3 Series car year and perhaps measure the length of your current square bars? |

Hi, thank you for replying - yes the old car was 2009! I have 853 2341 rails (120cms long) with 853 3232 feet. Looks like neither will fit or adapt to the F48 so I need new everything - but can sell the old ones as they are in good condition.
Have looked on ebay and seen rail kits from Farad and Modula for around £75 the pair. Anyone used either of them? Thanks |

Where/what is “Sun Motors”?
I think I will need a roof rack carrier. OEM at a good price sounds very easy...would you share your source please?

Thule Aeroblade 7603/7602. Almost no noise when nothing is attached, some whistling form 60kmh up with the ski attachment (no skis).
I'm not sure what the difference between Aeroblade and Wingbar is, they look the same as what hart4bmw has on his white X1. |

Recently did a 2000 km trip with a thule roof box and bmw roof bars. No whistling but there was substantially more wind noise on the highway than without.
Not that bad, with music turned on or a loud conversation is a non-issue. Did not try to use the roof bars alone as I pull them off when the roof box comes off. Overall very easy to install - about 10 minutes, add another 15 for the roof box with 2 people. Works great and a very solid setup. The X1 fit 4 adults comfortably with 2 snow boards and 2 sets of skis, along with ski boots and gear for an entire weekend. Really happy with the roof box and vehicle in general. Averaged about 8.4 L/100 km in -10 degree weather fully loaded with the roof box. Average speed was around 120 km/h. |
