X3 30i is boring as hell. I had one as a loaner and I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of it.

It’s all cars on this platform, the others just don’t have the acceleration so it’s less obvious. I think a transmission flash is in order

Saw that video and was like...omg it's not only us! They need to do something. Also, this car cuts power in 1st gear with TCs active...you don't know it because the light doesn't flash but you can feel it.

Nice. I'm glad to see it documented here in this video. It continues to be a major problem for me on a daily basis.

I agree it is an issue in Comfort mode. In Sport setting it just jumps, no issue there. Obviously this is a known issue for BMW.
I haven’t tried Eco mode, assume a lag also exists in that setting. Wonder if this is a built in fuel economy method. |

I sent off another e-mail to the BMW Owner's site about the throttle response. Had it happen in slippery conditions today, and it was more than just annoying.

I was trying to change lanes in traffic and there was a good three seconds before the car kicked down. I don't need full throttle and a blast of torque just enough to push me into the next lane. I now exclusively drive in manual mode.

I've been wondering if the issue is that it's coasting in 3rd gear, so the lack of response is similar to how a manual would feel in 3rd under the same circumstances. It's not high enough that it starts to stutter or anything (as it would in a manual), and since it's an auto it just sort of disengages while it downshifts. Then it finds the gear and off you go. It seems like when you're in sport "sharp" (i.e. M/S), it aggressively downshifts to first gear, but I don't think it does that in any other mode (even regular sport) on a consistent basis (unless you come to a full stop). I've started using the paddle shifter to make sure I'm in first gear, even in regular sport, to test the theory in different situations. I was also going to ask the Bimmercode guy if he could program the dash display to say which gear you're in, even when you're in the regular drive modes not displayed with M and S (like D1, D2, etc.). If so, you could definitely track the gearing and see if there's a consistent pattern...

So, Schöne Grüße from Bimmercode said he can't do the coding I described (I'm going to add an optimistic "yet" to his response). Also, I happened to get a call from BMW yesterday doing the satisfaction follow-up thing and I made a point of saying I loved the car but the throttle response issue needs to be addressed. I brought up this specific forum and thread as well as the videos folks have been posting as evidence there's an issue out there that needs attention. If my theory is correct, then a reflash could simply tell other driving modes to aggressively downshift, not just the top one, which would be an easy fix. You could keep the slow engagement for eco mode only. I could see engineers thinking that aggressive downshifting might be offputing to many drivers so they choose to ease-in instead. But clearly, many of us would prefer sure-action throttle response and be very willing to give up a smoother stopping/slowing experience...
