Tyre noise
As you gather from my spelling of tyre, I’m in the UK.
Have been thinking of buying a new X1. Took a test drive in a 20d xline last week. Wife and I loved the quiet comfortable ride. However, we could not believe how much tyre noise there was on certain road surfaces. The car was shod with Bridgestone Turanzas. I know tyre noise is subjective and possibly it was exacerbated by the apparent quietness of the rest of the car and engine but this is a deal breaker. The suspension was good, it was just the tyre noise. What are others thoughts? Would an SE on 17 inch rims be any different? Buying a car in the hope of quieter tyres is not an option. Tom |

Don't know what tires err..tyres are available in the Mother Country...but here in the Colonies we can get Conti DWS 06's...which are far superior in the wet (and light snow we get here by Lake Tahoe)...I exchanged the 18" wheels with 225/50 Pirelli P7's for a set of 225/55 Contis on 17" rims and it was a win-win-win-win.....Wet handling improved a ton, tire noise , road noise decreased noticeably, and the risk and cost of tire rim damage due to unseen potholes (snow filled) is much lower!

If you can get the car with non-RFTs and a spare (spacesaver) tyre kit, do it. Almost any brand tyre will be quieter than a RFT. Case in point, Pirelli P7s — we originally had RFTs and, with new tyres needed at 50,000km, changed to same tyre, non-RFT. Result: much quieter; much better ride

On the e84 we fitted Pirelli Sottozero Winters 210 225/50R17 94H RSC M&S and they were a lot quitter. Not yet fitted the winters on the f48. Run on Flats have vastly improved over the years |

My X line has ordinary factory standard tyres. The noise is awful. However that is because the UK has poorer road surfaces. When in Fran e or Switzerland there’s hardly any noise at all.
The car is also quieter on winter wheels and winter tyres which are 205 as opposed to 225 wide. If you are thinking of buying just check out depreciation. Despite a very good discount when new last December I have probably lost between 8 to 10k in depreciation. And mine has lots of extras including ng a panoramic sun roof required by management. That is expensive motoring. |

I would have preferred 17" wheels, which would have delivered a more compliant and possibly quieter ride than the Extra Load Turanzas, but that wasn't allowed in choosing the factory build spec for my car, the xLine only being available with 18" wheels and 225/50 tyres as standard. I'm finding the 17" winter wheels/tyres (205/60x17 Pirelli SottoZero3) I put on the car a few weeks ago give a far more comfortable ride and seem quieter too. |

Sorry for the delay - I just checked. I have the same tyres you have (Oct'18) - I really don't know why I can't hear the road noise then - it's much quieter than any of the cars I've had before.

In my experience, Bridgestone tyres — while they generally offer good handling — are noisy, especially once worn. They also have quite stiff sidewalls, which doesn't help ride comfort.
