F31 Tailgate opening on its own.

I've had this happen several times now, and I'm pretty sure it's just the button on the remote being pressed when it's in my pocket. Searching online seems to support this theory.

In a number of posts, people commented that the dealer can code the car so you need to unlock the car before the tailgate can be opened remotely, but I couldn't find any details of what needs to be changed.

Anyway, I went poking around with E-Sys, and finally found what needed to be changed. It's in the FEM module, and you need to change the following to 'aktiv'.

CLM_OPERATION_BOOTLID_AT_UNLOCKED

With this set to 'aktiv', the tailgate will not open from the remote, until the car is unlocked. I appreciate there's still some risk, but it's far less likely that the car will accidentally get unlocked, and then the tailgate button getting pressed. Also consider the car automatically locks itself if you unlock it, but don't open the doors for a couple of minutes.

Hopefully this will help if anyone is having similar problems.

This is the reason I have a comedy BMW key case. I know they are a bit big, but it prevents your boot being opened by mistake in your pocket.

I did look at those, but way too big.

Does anyone know if you can code it so you just push the bottom once to shut it rather than holding it (on the key fob)

Yes, I believe that is possible. You can also code the button in the footwell to close it as well.

My F30 did this and my new F31 did it the other day! I've coded it now so you have to hold the key fob button for 5 seconds before it opens. The default is only 0.5 seconds!

My car does this often. I'd been looking for a coding solution. Just tried it and it does what you say. Hopefully that's the end of the issue for me. Thank you.

Good to hear the info was useful.

If I continue to have issues, I'll start increasing the button press delay as mentioned above.

I think it's possible to completely disable the remote tailgate button as well, but that would be last resort. It's handy to open remotely sometimes.

Further to this, I coded this using BimmerCode in expert mode. No problems. Just in case anyone was wondering.
