e92 325i fuel consumption
Hi guys, im wondering if I should sell my car as its fuel consumption is too high. It gives me 19.6 mpg. I know it is a 325i with 217 bhp, but Im sure something is wrong. So I have changed the oil, the filter a month back and it went from 16mpg to 19.6mpg. My foot is not heavy at all.
What could it be down to? ( my feet is not heavy at all ) |

Even around town there's something seriously wrong there. Assume you have the N53 engine? In which case, I get around 30 in town and high 30s on a run. 500+ miles per tank on a run.
Suggest as a first step you go to a good indy and get your car read for any hidden codes. You may have a sensor down, for example...

I have a N53 325i Auto, and overall over 28,000 miles to date, I've averaged 27.2 mpg. Best tank ever was 38mpg but that was one long and gentle motorway cruise, worst was just shy of 22mpg, all around town.
How are you calculating your MPG? I use fuelly.com - much quicker than working it out yourself. Is the car serviced, and free of any fault codes?

The car had a new oil filter, new engine oil, air filter too. So my mpg increased, but as it should. Its nowhere near the manufacturers mpg. However reading some guys comments here, getting 22mpg, it seems Im not gonna get more out of it ... |

Reset your mpg before your next motorway journey and see what you get. I have D and getting slightly less mpg than other forum members but I do stop start kind of journey every day over the bridge and later through dartford tunnel. (6 miles each way) If you really want to compare your mpg to others then you should be comparing - average mpg - average mph And find out who is closest to you on average mph and then compare your mpg to that car.

1)The mpg readout on my E91 is always optimistic by between 5-10%. I believe this is an industry wide 'problem' since the mpg meter is not calibrated and legally required to be within a set tolerance (unlike the speedo) 2) In 2008 (I think) the 325 model moved to the N53 direct injection 3 litre engine which gets better mpg than the earlier N52 2.5 litre engine. (still 217 bhp). Last week I got 422.9 miles from a tank of 60.55 litres. This was 350 miles of motorway + town driving. The car indicated 33.6 mpg, but the maths says different: 60.55 litres / 4.545 = 13.322 gallons 422.9 / 13.322 = 31.74 mpg If I'm just doing town driving the indicated is around 28mpg. |

If 5mpg is a big difference and worth it to you, just get a little civic or something to use as a DD.

If you are saying that all your driving is around town then the MPG is not surprising. Changing to a 320D is unlikely to save you a lot of money - no car is particularly economical just driving around busy towns, and the diesels tend to be more expensive to buy to start with.

26.6mpg over my last 18 months of ownership, mostly 15 miles mixed to work and back, just what I guessed when I bought it based on other petrol BM's I have owned over the years.

There you go. One major factor. Get rid of beamer and get a hybrid car!

Over the moon with the mpg on my 330i n53 manual day to day i average 30mpg not holding back on the gas. Drove the 12 miles to work the other day and had 47.0mpg admittedly this was at 6:30 in the morning and driving carefully but thats astonishing from a 3L petrol.
