2018 28i

hi all,
wife brought home a CPO 2018 28i HEA2 with just under 50k miles on it yesterday. Car had come back from its lease.

First vehicle with auto start/stop, I drove it, it seemed like that system takes some time to actually kick in, maybe engine needs to get to running temps (i couldn't find an engine temp gauge lol) or something, none the less, while that system is off i notice the engine bogs down for a second when accelerating from a stop, i had it in comfort mode, almost as if it wasn't getting enough fuel or it's confused about wanting to be in auto start/stop, kind of jerky, if that makes sense. Car seems immaculate otherwise.

I've seen other threads with people having more aggressive symptoms along side something similar to this. I haven't had a chance to drive the car other than that one time because of the weather.

is this a common experience with the F39?
injectors? plugs? or am i more likely looking at something software related?

That is a normal feeling from auto start stop function in most cars, that’s why most of the drivers don’t like it.

My '22 actually gives me a symbol in the instrument cluster when the car is defeating auto start / stop on its own. Obviously this is triggered due to a host of parameters. Engine not warm may be on of them, I'll have to pay attention.

I'm not really picking up on any herky/jerky idling or stumbling upon driving away once the car turns itself back on after being in auto stop mode. I am amazed at how much of a shudder / heavy vibration happens when it lights itself back to life on occasion though. Seems much more pronounced than on other cars I've driven with auto start/stop.

You should be able to code out the auto start/stop if you wanted to with something like bimmercode or whatnot.

I should emphasize, this feeling is when the auto start/stop is NOT active. Once the system is ready, it seems to go away.

I have that same symbol in my dash when the system isn't ready, as well as a button to disengage it, but this jerky feeling is when the start/stop isn't active.

Seems like something is wrong IMO.

As far as engine temp, there's an 'idiot' display of that info if you cycle through the options that appear at the bottom of the cluster display... i.e. cold, normal....

I just put mine in Sport - no auto-start-stop. It can also be coded to do that automatically.

The engine temp display will change from idiot mode to a little blue/red sliding gauge, if you leave it there. Or at least, mine does.

Did not know this. Checked mine, is same. Very cool. Thanks for mentioning it.

I took off to work this morning with a very cold car. Auto-Stop didn't work for first couple of nearby intersections I had to stop at. The first time it did kick in the car was still registering "COLD" on the temp display though. So at least on my '22 the auto-stop/start system will activate before the car is up to normal operating temp.
