Aftermarket LED headlight bulbs: Phillips Ultinon
Hey guys first post here. Picking up our 2018 X1 28I Xdrive this afternoon. We got a smoking deal for a lease on a loaner ($399/mo $0 out of pocket) that we couldn't turn down... car had almost every option we wanted but LED headlamps and Car play. All our prior BMW's had HID's so this is going to be a bit of a pain point. Since it is a lease I don't want to go through too much trouble here.
Anyone try these Phillips Ultinon H7 LED? They have a video of install on what I think is an F48 X1 on YouTube. From the research I have done I think I need to do some coding for this (Bimmercode?)? I know they wont be as good as the OEM stuff but should be better than the standard halogen bulbs. Looks like I can get a pair for about $175 Thanks! Adam |

Thats a E84 X1. Still H7 bulbs. You can use Bimmercode to code these. Are you planning on installing a set of H8 LEDs in the fog lights?

Yea I will probably do the fog lights at the same time... Anyone have good luck with the cheaper LED bulbs? 1500+ of 5 star reviews is tempting for $38... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...F01L9JZGJ&th=1 |

Yea good point, more afraid of melting the housing or something. I found some F30 posts that were positive with them. Thanks for the responses. Leaving to pickup the truck in 20 minutes.

Here's a video of them on another car, looks like there is a lot of light scatter and some of the video the normal H7's look brighter, probably because they are more focused. All depends on the reflector in the X1.

Beamtech LED's came in today. They seem nice quality. Will try get them installed when wife gets home from work this evening. They look a bit of a pain to get to because you cant see what you are doing... maybe with the high beam covers off. I have my Bluetooth OBD module and Bimmercode ready.
f they work nice, ill order their high beam and fog lights. Last edited by st0k3d; 08-24-2018 at 03:45 PM.. |

Installed them last night. Install went pretty smooth. I had to bend the metal clasps that secure the low beam bulbs up somewhat because they were hitting the heatsinks on the LED. I don't think it will be and issue at all. They are installed now and seem to be working well. Coding went well for my first time. Just before coding they were flickering.
If the distance between the heat sink and the securing flange was longer I wouldn't have had to bend those tabs. From the images of the Phillips they might have been easier in that case, however they were also $140 more... I think I may try the fog lights next... How often do we really use our high beams? The way the high beams secure is different than the low beams which may help (no metal tabs). I also might just do LED indicators all around too. I don't want to code the car 50 times. You should also swap the highs to LEDs as well.

I just installed the LED fogs, and coded them. I also coded that the fog lights stay on with high beams, and can also work with the running lights. Last things to do is LED high beams, and I guess indicators/brake lights too. Maybe in a couple weeks. |

I've had the fogs coded to work with both the running lights and high beams.

I just ordered the H7 bulbs from this website below. They have a lot of great reviews...a little pricey but I hope worth it. Once I get them installed I will send a picture and hopefully by next week I will do the H8 fog lights.

Access headlight bulbs
How do you access the headlight bulbs on a 2018 BMW X1? I watched a video on replacing the bulbs on a BMW X1 accessing through the wheel well. My care does not seem to have the access through the wheel well.

I had my local BMW repair shop by my house install the light bulbs for me. He said it was a PITA but he got it done! I'm getting the LED fog lights and front turn signals done in 2 weeks.

Access headlight bulbs
Thanks for your speedy reply. How much did your mechanic charged for labor to replace the headlight bulbs? My local BMW dealer would charge $80 per headlight plus I supply the after market bulbs.
Did you upgrade from the original equipment halogen bulbs to LEDs or did you upgrade from the original halogens to better quality halogens? BMW also told me that an error light might show up on my dashboard even though the new bulb may work just fine. Any thoughts on that? |

He just charged me 1 hour of labor. I believe it was $100 to install both bulbs. I stay away from the dealership at all costs. I found this guy on a BMW forum and he happened to open a BMW shop here in Nashville.
Did you upgrade from the original equipment halogen bulbs to LEDs. Yes, I upgraded from the original halogen bulbs to LEDs. I attached a picture below of the bulbs on in my garage during the day. You can also see the difference in the color of the low beam (LED) and fog lights (halogen at the moment) |

Access headlight bulbs
How did your mechanic gain access to the headlight bulbs? I was told by BMW that you have to take the wheel well lining off. Is this true?
