Battery Life
I have a 2016 X1 and was wondering typically when you would have the battery replaced? Is there an indication from the onboard computer that tells you when to replace the battery? Thanks.

It is said that batteries will last about 5 years. If you keep it maintained by trickle charging on a regular basis it will last a lot longer.

As Peter_R said, it should last at least a little longer with good maintenance. However, in my case, a dashcam used a lot of power while the car was parked without locking it. You know, when you leave it open in your house, and people go to it to grab something, so every time they open the doors, the dashcam is activated, which causes a high power consumption without recharging it properly. After that, the battery didn't come back to life, sort of speak, so I replaced and coded it using Bimmercode. You can also use, for example, BimmerLink to read the actual battery capacity or a USB dongle, etc.

Guess BMW on-board computer does not tell you it's time to replace the battery?

I just want to add a final tip that you probably know, but if your battery is kind of old, you should avoid rapid discharge, for example, keeping the radio on with the ignition off. That's because the battery cannot hold the charge like a new one; it loses efficiency.

You live in an area where it gets cold. Your battery is over 5 years old. Get it load tested to make a determination. I've never had a battery survive over 4 years.

To add to Chowsers comment easiest way to know is have someone check fault codes with ISTA as low voltage from the battery is always logged as a fault.
Another sure sign is when certain things switch off when they previously worked immediately. Example welcome light not on, I drive screen won't switch on until engine starts, interior light etc. The car limits services when voltage is low to ensure you can start and run minimal required modules to start. It gets cold here, like -32F for you Americans, every winter. I use a battery blanket overnight and never have issues starting.

Completely pointless bump of a month old thread.
They are used predominately in Alaska too, but I know you Americans forget about it being a state. When vehicles don't come with the option of block heaters, such as BMWs, you do what you can to minimize the impact of operating in extreme cold. NJ doesn't face that problem.

There are 3 levels of warning that your BMW may give you when your battery is below its recommended state of charge…and depending on your BMW model and how it is optioned…the warnings can appear in the instrument cluster or the iDrive screen:

A battery tender does wonders for vehicles, not just an X1, that sits for extended periods of time. (over a week). New cars have excessive electronics that draw slight amounts of power that eventually drain batteries. This isn't so much an issue where cold weather isn't a factor like the southern states. If you frequently make short trips in cold weather then a good battery tender will save you tones of money in battery replacements.

My 2016 X1 no longer shuts off the engine in ECOPRO mode. I have confirmed that my ASS (Auto Start Stop) is not deactivated. Will this be a sign that the battery is slowly dying? I got it checked at Advance Auto Parts and it was showing over 12V before we started the ignition, but dropped below 12 after we started the ignition. I am wondering if the Advance Auto Parts guy is trying to sell me battery and hence is not being completely honest. Thoughts?
I have now bought a battery charger/maintainer and I am going to see if charging the battery restores my ASS function. Any insight from you all experienced users is greatly appreciated. Last edited by amolvb; 01-13-2023 at 09:38 PM.. Reason: Added more info about battery charger/maintainer |

Hi all
I'm pretty sure I've got a battery that's on the way out ... I have a 2016 X1 and I'm having issues starting the car (especially on the colder days) and oddly I'm seeing a message warning my bonnet is not closed. I think this might be related and I've triple checked the bonnet is closed. However, I've not seen any of the warning messages as per the images above ... is there a way I can check if the battery really does need replacing or shall I just get it done! |

2018 55k miles, dealer said 18 months ago battery needs replacing as it had failed on the computer test but then said only needs to be changed when struggling to start. Its still going strong no issues.

So when do you actually get the battery replaced? 🤔
I’m getting a failed start every morning but the engine kicks in on second attempt usually Still not seen any obvious on-screen messages regards to the battery health |

you’re not going to see anything on-screen to replace the battery. if you’re having issues with starting car up on first attempt, just replace the battery now. this is a warning sign that it’s slowly going out, so best to get it replaced before the car just won’t start at all one morning.
