Excellent guide, congrats!
I hope that more owners will fix their error using the guide and will not accept to pay to BMW for a new gear selector.

Did you found the cause of the errors ?
Ștefan,

Did you repair it ? If yes can you tell me where and how you did it ? I am also from Romania. Thanks!

Hi coxmix,

I didn't repaired it. I changed the selector gear with an already repaired one.
But you better use the instructions from above in this thread and you will fix it yourself. You will save a lot of money.

Regards,
Stefan

I used your guide and it worked! Minor difference in my car were 3 cables going to the arm rest for a cell phone docking accessory. It was a lot of work to get to that little spring. I wish I could just buy a new spring rather than adjust the broken one. I hope it doesn’t break again. It took me a long time to do everything, but it will be much faster if I have to go back in again. What a pain for a tiny little spring!

An improvement to your guide would be with your step 10 on removing the gear selector unit. All you gotta do is turn the unit over and align the gear to line up the semi-round clip to the hole at the bottom. Once aligned you need to push the semi-round clip through from the bottom using a small screwdriver like the jeweler’s flathead. I hope that helps others attempting this.

Another minor improvement would be to move the passenger seat prior to disengaging the battery for the second item of step 4.

Thanks again, James!

The Guide was great, Here are some more photos to help fill in some of the missing photos and some other ideas for how it is done. I had the duct work in my F48 so you can see how that is installed as well.

After I reset the spring and plugged everything back in notifications disappeared. No reset was necessary and no coding was necessary. For reference it failed for me at around 115k kms I think.

Thank you again!

I couldn't find one easily for this. I wish I measured the spring but was running out of time. It is easy enough to uncoil and re-use.

One thing I should add is that when my error started to come up it was noticable more difficult to move the shifter periodically. This was because the white component with the spring mounted to it wouldn't be where it needs to be to allow for a smooth movement.

I'm assuming you are out of warranty?

X1 in Canada with the same issue

Hi there,

I am currently in dispute with my 3rd party warranty trying to get this part covered.

They are claiming this is not an internal component of the transmission.

Anyone else have experience with this? Any chance anyone has a transmission diagram that I can show them to further prove my case?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I am being quoted $1400 CAD for the repair without warranty.

Unfortunately it is just a selector for the transmission and is not internal to the transmission components. You can argue that if the selector is malfunctioning there is a risk that the transmission will also not work. In addition there is a risk that the warning holds a vehicle rolling risk that could lead to injury or death. Maybe even allowing the vehicle selector to go into park or reverse while in motion (likely electronics to protect from this but I am not sure).

The fix works and instructions are quite detailed as a last resort. Good luck!

I just got a quote from a local BMW dealer:
$900 for the gear selector assembly
5hx$150 labor
the decision is obvious, I'll do it myself

There are rebuilt gear selectors available on ebay as described previously, but they may require coding to get working. The spring fix described in the write-up does not require any coding and all error codes go away.

We asked several times but haven't received any feedback. We have sent our mutual claim in November 2019 and the part was replaced under the Godwill programm. I could share the letter copy if you would give us your email.
Hi everyone

I had this same issue a while back and it disappeared by itself. I also created a thread on this without realising how much effort had gone on here. My car is also out of warranty and I'm a bit concerned It may come again. Can I get the letter too? Also the exact part number that was replaced. It may be worth keeping it in hand in case I need it for later

Thanks

I have the same issue recently. My car is 2016 X1 F48 i20. I'm asking if the recall has any progress and how it could be repaired in Australia. I also asked if they can deal with the spring using the guide.

Thanks for the feedback - glad it helped!

PS - I dont have power seats, so moving the seat after battery was not an issue for my car.

Hello All,

Seems there have been a few replies since my fix:

I have taken mrexcuse feedback and added his notes to the guide. Credit is given - Thank you!

Here is the updated guide if you need it.

@Ryan-77 - You will not win this one with extended warranty providers.

CYclonic No recall on this part. (Maybe Goodwill claim if your BMW Dealer is nice to you)

Thank you jamessfarnell!

BMW Australia quoted a $264 diagnosis fee to start the conversation...

I would take the courage to try the guide method. It will be a HUGE life milestone for me if it goes well.

If anyone may find a replacement product number or eBay link would be greatly appreciated!

That's the one.
It took 6h to complete, including 2h to come up with a plan for how to fix the spring.
As suggested earlier, take lots of pictures when disassembling. It will be helpful on the way back.

@jamessfarnell and all - thanks for the quite detail procedure.

Cheers.

Have the same issue with my 2016 X1, will try and follow the guide but am hesitant as I am not very mechanically savvy. If I am unable to do the repair immediately will there be any bad effects or is this something that I can leave alone for a while without causing further issue?
