That said, I have invested in a spare wheel kit simply because in Australia and with the driving I do, there's a higher risk I may be somewhere remote when I have a puncture. Or have to rely on driving maybe 100 km or more on the punctured RFT.
Exactly!...the dirty little secret on RFT's is that the tire makers all say "DO NOT travel more than 50 miles (80.47 Km) without air pressure in the tire!" That's great if you're retired to a tropical island where you're never far from your garage...not so good if you are 150-200 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon! I bought a spare/jack kit for my 328 just instantly on reading that warning...and believe it or not...got a puncture up in the Sierra foothills on a Sunday afternoon on our very first out of town trip! Hit the "BMW Assist" button and they called me by name and gave me my exact location....told me they could "arrange a tow to the nearest BMW dealer....who would fix my problem tomorrow morning"....I laughed and told em wife and I had to be at work a 3 hour drive away and that I had my spare on already! Drove down to "civilization" and found a tire shop open. The other "feature" of RFT's is that if you run on em...they won't patch em since there's no way to know if you've gone over the 50 range....Since I had a spare on...tire was patched and rebalanced and we drove home...for $20 and a 1/2 wait. |

I just ordered the spare + jack kit from bimmerzone and it should be here today. My runflats are scheduled to be removed on Monday. I can't wait to be back on traditional tires. I was hoping to go for a full sized spare but I couldn't find anywhere to sell me a steel rim, and all of my RF's are trashed, and I didn't have time to measure out fitting a full sized spare + my roadside kit I carry ...
The spare wasn't cheap, but I figure the OTC puts me at about the same price as replacing the current tires with RF's so I'll be ahead next time and I should no longer have so many issues getting tires patched and service done on them. |

The spare from bimmerzone showed up almost immediately. The jack doesn't have any sort or storage for it, so I just left it wrapped in the bubble wrap and threw it in the trunk for now. The wheel fits perfectly on the left side of the tire storage in the trunk without any changes / tiedown.
I'm only 2 days into the new tires however they are much quieter and less harsh then the runflats. I've had these on other cars before so I'm hoping they hold up just as well with the X1. I loaded the Bridgestone Potenza RE980's. |

On the subject of Jacks - I made enquiries at my local dealership and was informed the jack would be in tne order of £120 plus.
I therefore purchased a secondhand X3 E83 jack on ebay for £35 and it does the job perfectly. This jack has the correct size shoe to fit into the plastic lifting points on the chassis and more importantly the shoe is orientated 90degrees to the jack winding point. I have noted many non OEM Jacks listed on eBay have the shoe aligned to the winding point which to me would mean some awkward winding required? |

Speed limitation, yes —- but there's no distance limitation marked on mine. That said, you'd obviously change it as soon as you can.

I've been using something like this for years and no issue.
Throw that in the back with a set of pliers and a portable tire inflation that you plug into the 12V jack and you are set. edit: sorry for the massive pic.

I am thinking of carrying a spare tire. I see number 3 which looks like articulated jack and can fit well in the foam storage also. Any idea if I can buy one jack like that and put in that space instead of scissor jack which I will have to keep beside the spare. I want to maximize the extra storage beside the spare. thanks. |

My conclusion from their replies is that, in the U.K., nearly all refuse point blank to repair a runflat regardless of whether it has been driven on or not. Only one national chain said they would repair dependent on manufacturer recommendation (e.g. no if Pirelli, once if Michelin) and type and location of damage. In brief, imho, it is almost pointless to have a spare if you use run-flats in the U.K. Precisely because you will not save money by quickly removing it to reduce damage. In Australia, where you could be miles out in the bush, yes, it could save your life. In the U.K.( or most of Western Europe) you are rarely more than 20 miles from a garage. I have instead of a spare tyre in the boot, got; a rubber/string tyre repair kit, pair of pliers to remove culprit, an electric tyre inflator and some tyre sealant. if the tyre does develop a puncture and I have some distance to drive it should help keep the tyre to correct pressure. If I am lucky and the patch holds (assuming it is in middle of tread), I will save money by continuing to use the tyre. Possibly reckless? maybe but I check my tyres very regularly for pressure, damage and wear. When the runflats need replacing I will go for ordinary tyres and a skimpy spare. The hart4bmw set-up will do nicely, and thanks to others for bag & mat recommendations. Last edited by MJE60; 02-23-2019 at 06:14 PM.. |

Nice kit, where can I get one? I have assembled something similar from loose parts and not such good quality.

For those that have a spare wheel (but not full BMW kit), is it possible to secure the spare down with just the wing screw (part # 07119908728), cover (part # 36106857383) and bracket (part # 36106857382) without the styrofoam insert?
I have the spare wheel, tire and jack already. Can anyone confirm that the cover, wing screw and bracket can lock down the wheel without the styrofoam insert piece? Much appreciated. |

https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin...on=71151180625 On another note, my X1 did not have the nut under the liner for the bolt that would secure the jack, to the left of the spare tire. The wing bolt nut and bracket nuts are there. |

JB426 and oakey46, thanks for looking at your setup. I'm going to get those parts and rig up a DIY spacer to fill the gap to ensure a snug fit. The styrofoam piece wont be useful for me and will just take up space.

That plugging kit looks like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/ARB-10000011-...gateway&sr=8-3 Link is to Amazon in the U. S., not sure if that will work for you guys in Europe. I have that plugging kit but haven't used it on a BMW. I did use it on my Suzuki SUV and it worked well. I don't carry the case, I took the pieces out and put them in the bag of my Viair 70P compressor (12V). Even with a spare, a compressor could be very handy since they require a really high pressure and most of us do not check it real often. I have yet to have a spare in well over 40 years driving that I could not limp home on using a compressor - they have all been slow leaks. If I get a X1 or X2, however, it will have a spare. I would not expect to need it but especially on a trip, it could really save the day. I am not a run flat fan. I believe their main purpose is to help people avoid messing with a flat. You don't have to get dirty, you can drive to the tire replace and spend a lot of money.

Hello everyone.. I'm contemplating switching to non run flats on my new (to me) '16 X1. I just checked the under floor compartment where the spare tire kit would be secured but there is no hole in the liner. Now I'm not sure if there is actually a nut under there for the wing bolt to secure the kit to the floor. I'm not willing to slit open the liner to find out
Has anyone encountered this before? I'd really like to secure the kit down with the wing bolt and not bother with tie downs, etc. Last edited by karma_police; 04-08-2019 at 12:45 PM.. |
