I researched my options pretty much all Sunday!

The only truly reliable LED seems to be Philips X-tremeVision LED which costs more than twice the top Halogen versions (Philips or Osram). They also have a converter box that I'm not sure will fit in the bumper or if it will cause any rattles later. Plus, it's 6000k which is not exactly road legal in the UK.

The smaller cheaper unknown brands on Amazon either cause overheating (to the point that they melt the plastic components) or flickering, and/or trigger an error message in iDrive.

Halogen seems to be the safest hassle-free plug 'n' play option for now. I actually considered going full yellow (2600k Osram Fog Breaker). But opted for white ones in the end.

BMW's have a bulb check system that will send a smal current to each bulb on the car in order to rest if they are out. The problem is that LED bulbs will occasionally flicker because of the test sent by the car. The only way to avoid that is to either use an incandescent bulb or code the car not to run the test.

Their pupose is to give you better visibility in fog, isn't it?
The color of fog lights doesn't really matter. Years ago people used to think that yellow provided better visibility, but more recently scientists have shown that the color has no affect on how well you can see in the fog. Nowadays, fog lights are yellow because it shows off that your car has fog lights. The physical position of the fog lights on the bumper (lower is better) matters much more than the color of the light.

There's a long Quora exchange on the subject here: https://www.quora.com/Why-do-automob...e-yellow-light

Interesting read, Shiny.

A lot of automotive regulations and laws and even our own perceptions are outdated IMO. Colour temperature for example, new HID and LED lights far exceed the legal limit for halogens. And yet cooler blue-ish halogens headlights aren't allowed. Whether the source is a bulb or a diode should be irrelevant. If it's a dazzling issue, it can be fixed with proper reflectors and glass.

Due to some automotive regulations and laws most LED headlights now have anti dazzle reflectors, cornering and high beam diversion systems (via front camera). Some car headlights also have sliding filters that cover the lamp when needed so that the light is split into zones when oncoming light sources or street lights are detected (Population Zone) which still allow the headlight to light up the road and sides without any dazzle or glare to pedestrians or oncoming traffic.

Congrats, the car looks great! Could you share where you obtained the lighted sills from?

Could you post a few more pics from the door sills please?
I'm doubhting between the BMW logo and the M performance ones, since i have M steering wheel maybe it would match with the M one.

My door sill plates just arrived in the post today. Was deciding between the standard BMW one and M Performance one - settled with BMW one due to the price ($100 less). There's actually a 3rd version but that seems harder to find.

It feels solidly made in quality plastic, aluminium and rubber on the edges. Powered by 2x CR2430 batteries on each plate, I hope they don't need replacing too often. Now if only my car would hurry up on its way to Oz...

That's funny. You know you are a fanatic when your parts arrive before the car does! 😁

The sills are oem from BMW. I bought them on EBay for a discounted price. The good thing is that they have 2 years warranty.

They can be found here as well. They have both versions, BMW and M Sport, available.

Comparison photograph:

Fitted the Osram 4300K today, it's not a perfect match but agree that it's MOT compliant and saves drilling holes to fit the Philips LED. The Osrams are a good upgrade from the stock OEM lights, looks much better. Thanks for all the detail, much appreciated.

I bought mine on eBay. The ones for the f30 (3 series) fit the X1. It is a tight fit but pop right in. All you have to do is take a flat blade and pry one side of the light on the underside of the door card. Ones you gently pry it out, slide out the other side and press the release clip to unplug them. Plug in the new one (be sure to check for orientation) and then pop in the new ones. Very easy swap.
Did your projector have that extra wire that came along? Or was it direct plug-in?

Thanks for this. Just spent half an hour turning the adjuster with an Alan key before I saw this! Guess I'll have to try to adjust them now.
