Rattle noise
Hi guys,
My wife drives a 2020 X2 with 15k km ok it. This morning after running on idle for 2min it started to do that rattle noise, take a look at the attached video. What do you think ? Noise goes away as soon as you apply a bit of gas. https://youtube.com/shorts/CfqWjxb2TW4?feature=share

Sorry mate, can't really tell what the issue is here. Best to have it checked next time you get around the garage. They should be able to diagnose it pretty quickly.

I guess I will have to have dealer listen to it. Issue is that it is not doing it every time …

I started noticing the same with my 2019 in the morning. Try this:
• Start engine • Turn off AC • Wait until catalytic warmup is complete • Pump the brakes several times —or— • Unplug vac line to brake booster If the noise gets quieter when you do either of these things then I would see your dealer to possibly replace the oil vacuum pump. For me, this is SIB 11 07 19 Side note: I think if your car isn't showing oil change recommended then you get a free one so something to consider. |

Not yet. I plan too soon. Did the noise get quieter when you pressed the brakes? Let us know how it goes! |

It seemmed to get quieter when i pumped the brakes but wasn't day and night difference… i made another video so should be able to make my dealership to listen to it if they can't replicate. Also realized coolent level is going down… topped it up in July and was under low mark again…

For my X1, I topped off and went through the coolant bleed procedure 2-3 times, which got rid of the trapped air. The level has remained steady for over 3 months now. After digging a bit more, I realized that I may have inadvertently introduced air bubbles into the cooling system from checking the coolant level when the engine was not completely cold. Over time the air can lead to overheating and loss of coolant issues. The B46 technical training manual also specifically warns to never open the sealing cap when the engine is hot. Just a thought to consider re. your coolant loss. |

Thank you for sharing your experience in regards to coolant. I will follow-up. For now, I left car at dealership this morning they will be checking rattle noise and do pressure test for coolant loss issue.

Well, brought car back from the dealer. Guess what ?! They were not able to reproduce the noise… they can't hear it well enough in the video. :
For coolant, they did pressure test and everything seems fine, so maybe was just some air in the system, will monitor

Had the same noise in my car, brought it to dealer twice: first they replaces the crankshaft pulley, but the noise persisted. Then BMW NA technician was diagnosing it for a week and made a decision to replace the whole engine. On a car with 10k miles
They replaced everything, and now I have no issues like that after 5k miles. Not the best solution BMW could provide, but at least they did it under the warranty so I paid $0. |

Thank you for sharing your experience ! It is a bit preoccupying that an engine had to be replaced so early ! I will follow-up on my issue. It doesn't do the sound everytime…

For me it was happening only on cold start, after RPM lowers to ~750.

Yup, every single time when engine was cold
But when they swapped the engine - it's literally purring But for me it was hilarious that they couldn't find a problem with BMW technician for 2 months and had to swap the whole engine, which costs ~10k only for parts. |
