got a dogo

So OH finally pulled the trigger and got a dogo for the daughter

he's a Maltese mix, 11 weeks old from a breeder, house trained (OH's sister had him for a week or so and actually got/picked the the dog for us)

he is called Cody, and we keep calling him her, daughter aggravated and worried that he will have gender issues (LOLOLOL)

nice quiet/gentle dog/ has spent the day investigating and dragging toys socks and slippers into basket

Me, I'm not involved in cleanup's or ANY responsibilities that is squarely on daughter and OH

any tips ?

Maybe it identifies as a cat, hopefully no ones allergic.

Ummm... the same way you live without a dog in your house.

Congrats on the new addition! I’m sure your daughter is very happy with such a cute dog.

My only suggestion is to adjust your expectations on the part about involvement and responsibilities even if that is the official house rule lol.

Just adorable.
Hoping you get a lot of enjoyment out of the little bundle of joy.

I'd recommend getting the "Dogo" app - it's one of those apps that fills a niche - helpful for training, even has timers for potty training.

I'm not really a pet person per se, but DD has been whining for a dogo for years, and the idea is more responsibility for her, no sleep ins

we have to go over the house again "baby" proofing everything, the dog get's into everything, so have to treat him like a baby,

I will say, it's fun and nice.

The house dynamics have changed, family has stopped screaming at each other slamming doors, having hissing fits, melt downs etc. I told everyone that we all need to chill out other wise the dog will get upset.

So for the first time in years (last night this morning) no melt dowsm so I'll take that !LOL

Yeah the focus in the house is on dogo !

He decided at 1am he was hungry and then he decided to do a dump and wanted to play.... with my OH hahahaha, I was upstairs asleep
DD slept in the couch downstairs and was oblivious and I think eventually OH tried to put him in the cage by 4, but he wasnt having it, LOL

But the dog is very quiet no barking, only very occasionally, but is very smelly was told he had a change of food, so now, any gas episodes in the house can be blamed on dogo ! very whiffy, yesterday we had to have doors open, all solid p no diarrhea, it was the recommended pellet type food.

Congrats! Malteses are my favorite breed. Currently have Bella and she is 5 years old. Maltese's are attention seekers who need a lot of love, attention, and playful stimulation to keep them happy. You don't need to take them on long walks all the time, but playing with them with toys or in the backyard will be enough activity for them for the most part. Make sure to socialize them as much as possible when they are puppies with other humans & dogs. Malteses are pretty jealous as they grow older, so it's best to have them socialized at an early age like any dog. They are very fast learners. I remember the first day I got Bella, she was scared to go up the stairs to the 2nd level. I put her front paws on the first step, then showed her how to pick up her hind paws, and she zoomed up the stairs a moment later.

They can be prone to hip dysplasia & knee luxation, so make sure to always keep an eye on your pupper's hind legs as they grow.

Your puppy is beautiful - enjoy his company for many years to come!

Cute. We have a Havanese who looks near-identical. Cutest littlest things.

That’s a pretty bizarre statement. Did you have an incident with a dog when you were a child?

Just one more suggestion: start now to get the pupper used to being touched (paws, tail, all over, really) and brushed daily.
Makes life easier for your family and the dog.

Chris Christensen dog brushes with the wood pins are good, as are plastic slickers.

I used to feel the exact same way. That's why my family got a toy breed like OP's. Some of these breeds don't shed, don't drool, don't smell, are hypoallergic, etc. Your home and car will stay clean. For me it just feels like having a little brother in the house as he behaves much like a human child.

I would never get a larger dog or a dog that sheds. I prefer the cuddly little lap dogs loll.

this was EXACTLY why my OH wanted this type, has amazing problems with allergies, don't like hair shedding and is also allergic to cats

we are seeming to be having a problem on day 2, Cody is scratching like a MOFO, especially behind the neck ears, has only had 1 shot (for worms I thing) also after a good scratch will give his body a good shake, (you know like when there wet)

Were gonna take him to a vet tomorrow, I'm worried he may have some kinda allergy or skin conditions, I think Maltese commonly have skin or allergic reactions, again only 11 weeks old, not been in contact with any dogs or outside stuff until he's had all his shots.

we havent bathed him yet, due in a couple of weeks (I think every 3 weeks)

some research, need to spray a hydrating spray before brushing with a good quality pin brush and need to clear up his tear skin with a a good wipe

The scratching / itching I can't speak on - it's real good that you're taking the pup to the vet to get looked at.
If you haven't done so since you got it, even better. Get the vaccination schedule, plan on the HeartGard/NexGard monthly medication too.
It's good that you're limiting exposure to other dogs and outside.

Couple more points:
- you don't need to bathe them that often - it's actually doing more harm than good as it's taking the natural oils away
- The daily brushing will get rid of most of the smells too - unless they go into something really unpleasant outside
- Getting the pup used to being touched and held as I mentioned earlier helps with grooming
- Get an eye comb to get the boogers out of his eyes
- Too young to trim hair just yet - holding his face / snout gently and combing will help - you'll likely have to do it in stages

Giving him fltered / bottled water out of a ceramic / steel bowl will help with the eye staining.

See what the vet says but I’d try a different food based on our prior experience with a similar issue (but never just switch one day to the next - need to blend for at least a few days). There are dog skin and allergy specialists if necessary.

I was going to suggest - find a vet you like and trust at a place where you can be assured of seeing that same vet each time you go in.
