Great as long as they make a 6 series

The original hype was that this car would allow BMW to make the next 6 more sporty and inline with the 911 and AMG GT S. Let's hope that is still the case and not them giving up on hitting those two some real competition.

I have to agree - I don't see the point of yet another heavy coupe GT car that costs a fortune.

If I ever spend close to 100k on a car it won't be a slick 2 door limo, it'll be a second hand R8, Turbo S or McLaren... (Unless the i8 evolves into something super). It will certainly not be a car that'll be worth 20k after 10 years
Yes, for you a $100k used car may be fine. I think the first consideration people make when shopping within a budget is new or used and they rarely cross the line once decided. New is new and used is certainly not new.

What are the chances this will have an S74 engine? The 4.0 8 is still cool though.

Super cars?

R8 AMG GTS and Porsche Turbo are high end sporty daily driver cars. That's different than say a Ferrari 488. Yes they should make a car that competes directly with their German counterparts. A halo car if you will.

Nobody buys SL63 anymore. Lol

I thought the original hype was the 6 is gone and replaced by the 8?

Well that's the question isn't it. What's the point of the 6er (in its current state) if there's going to be an 8 series. I know the whole 3 series 5 series arguments but IIRC the 6 series is a fraction of the sales of the saloons (sedans) so unless it becomes a different proposition the 8er will attract former 6er buyers

You are on the right track with the "lightweight" comment.

BMW's current N63/S63 V8 is based on the same architecture as their original M60 whose design dates back to the 1980s. It was conceived with a generous 98mm bore center and thus the ability to accommodate larger displacements over time. Indeed they have gone as high as 4.9L in the E39 M5 and the Z8. However, in today's world where everything is turbocharged, larger displacement is not necessary.

BMW's main rivals - Mercedes and Audi - have more compact designs. I believe Mercedes has a 90mm bore center while Audi's is 91mm. This not only makes for a slightly lighter engine (assuming everything else equal), but also allows for a smaller package by a few cm in length. This may seem like a minor point but packaging constraints are crucial - a few cm more and everything around must be larger in turn, which leads to weight gain in other components and areas of the vehicle.

So, although there is no hard info yet, the assumption here is that BMW's new V8 will be more compact. I suspect a 91mm bore center so that it can share common parts with the B* engine family, but that's just my speculation.

Why is anyone excited about this? Its just a giant, highway cruising luxobarge.
Seriously what's the point of making a coupe' longer than a cadillac escalade? If you put some more work into the M4, you could make it into a better coupe in every way.

Remember, Mercedes is going to debut a new E Class coupe and convertible next year despite the fact that they have the S Class coupe already, and even added the S Class convertible back after generations of absence.

Also, recall that in prior generations, Mercedes had the 'tweener CLK model that sat between the C Class and E Class. Although they renamed it to the E Class last generation, it still sat in that space. But now with a dedicated C Class coupe and convertible for the first time ever, this new E Class coupe and convertible will move up market and sit squarely in the space occupied by the 6 Series coupe and convertible.

No doubt BMW wants to be in any profitable market that their main competitor is in. So, there may yet be both a proper pair of 6 Series two-door models along with these rumored new 8 Series models. This will give BMW the 4, 6, and 8 to go against the two-door Mercedes C, E, and S. That still leaves Mercedes without an A Class coupe/convertible in the 2 Series market, but that's a story for another thread.

Right, but we have to keep in mind that Mercedes and VAG are monstrous entities compared to BMW. They can afford a larger risk and investment, and can better make cases for subsidizing with halo products.

I am genuinely excited for a big body coupe (that's not the 6-series) and if the 8's get released after a long hiatus, I'd definitely rethink my current F82.

I love big body coupes but I couldn't fathom switching to Merc's S63 or S550 lineup.

I don't know what's the hype about, it's going to be more expensive than the 750 and the fact that concept photo rarely matches the actual when they come out... I'll put it on the back burner for now, don't get me wrong I love the 8 from back in the day
