Having come a car with the lovely Z8 auto with electronic shifter, my biggest bugbear with my F48 is the awful 1990s style auto shifter.
Even my wife's humble 116i has the electronic shifter!

Trouble is, I hear the F48 electronic shifter is mated with a DCT gearbox - and from what I read these can be very jerky in stop-start city traffic and are whiplash inducing when changing down, like when coming up to stop at a junction.

How do you find it?
No, the one I have is mated to the AIsin 8-AT auto — not as good as the ZF-8AT, but much better than any DCT I've experienced. But lower model X1's do have the 7-DCT

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately we don't have the 25i (or28i) in the UK.

From what I can see, UK petrol models now get a DCT with electronic shifter and the Diesel cars get a "sports" auto transmission with electronic shifter.

I'm guessing the "sports" auto in the UK diesels is the Aisin, just like in your 25i, due to the higher torque whereas the 18i & 20i get the DCT.

Thats right. The diesel gets Aisin as the ZT goes for its big brothers like x3. I cannot tell about gasoline models

I wonder what build dates will be LCI? I ordered an X1 a couple of months ago and it's being built this week. I'll let you know what I think about the first gen E84 X1 vs the new F48 X1. I will say that the E84 X1 x35i was a fun little SUV to drive. An I6 just isn't possible on the new platform because the engine is transversely mounted. I've had a 335i and I'm trading in a 335is DCT on this X1 so I've had some fun BMWs. I wanted a decent DD for Italy and my 335is is pretty high in miles. The dealer here won't work on the car so I decided to trade it in. I ordered an EB MSport with the premium package. It's going to cost way less in insurance, taxes, and gas here which are all insanely expensive.

Oh - that's odd
The UK BMW configurator, here shows the petrol models as either having a "dual-clutch automatic transmission" (18i models) or "Sport double-clutch automatic transmission, Seven Speed" (20i models). Is that wrong? Or have they changed the set-up since you bought yours?

If I understand correctly:
- new electronic shifter now comes standard in Europe, regardless of which gearbox (DKG, automatic, sport or not) you have. I wonder if the shifter is different between regular and sport model as it used to on other models.
- 7 speed / DKG is for sd18i sd20i only (probably torque-limited and FWD only)

Couple of months ago and it's just being built?! Wow does it really take this long?

I just ordered this weekend and the dealer told me that it should be available in the middle of September. Given shipment time from Europe I figure that I figure it should be built relatively soon after the order.

Is there any info on when the LCI model will actually go on sale and when there will be specs out on it?

Just looked at the BMW car configuration and it looks like BMW have changed the auto box. My X1 X line 2 litre petrol definitely has an 8 speed auto box. I believe it is based on the ZF auto box but may be an Aisin box. My car I recall was made on the 5/12/2017 and delivered on the 28/12/2017.
Great car achieving 40 to 45 mpg on a French and Swiss motorway run fully loaded. A slightly larger boot would be great.

Yes, I think you are correct in saying the 8 speed auto is similar to the ZF box and I was told it was a joint development between BMW and Jaguar, but I think I read that the 20i auto was to be switched to the dual clutch 7 speed box that is manufactured by Getrag. It is the box fitted to my 18i auto and I have been very impressed by it to date and would say I prefer it to the 7 and 6 speed DSG boxes fitted to my two previous Audi Q3s.

The 8sp AT in the F48 X1 has always been an Aisin box — no ZF because of horizontal engine layout. The 7sp DCT is a recent addition fitted to FWD/ lower torque models and is made by Getrag

This might be retrograde step in quality. VW have had an issue with the DSG auto box which I think is the same as DCT. Known not to be as reliable.
Thankful my auto box is more “traditional” with a torque converter.

I agree with you. I owned/own both -the older model got lousy gas mileage, had more road noise, took potholes like a Mini, had crummy electronics, less comfortable seats and didn't have much more pep than the F48. And the newer version is much better in the snow. I don't even need snow tires now up here in the mountains of PA.

Notice the guy you quoted never drove either series, I own an E84 MSport and it drives much better than the new X1. Got a new X1 all wheel drive for a full day with over 60 miles of driving and it wasn’t close. Drive is not electronics, road noice, room, its DRIVE and HANDLING. Sport seats in the E84 MSport are great.

Drive is also subjective. I've driven many miles in both an F48 and an E84, both xdrive. Granted the F48 was fully loaded and the E84 a base model.

The E84 is quick and agile, however its much rougher of a ride then the F48 which does a much better job of absorbing rough roads. The E84 is quicker off the line however the F48 feels like a much faster car to drive (I have not driven the i6 E84).

I don't mind the E84, however I'm glad I waited for the F48 before jumping into the X1 family.

An M3 is rougher to drive than a standard 3 series but which one handles better. E84 center of gravity is much lower than the current X1, its 2-3 inches lower. The only reason I haven’t bought a new X1 is ride height and handling but I may check out an X2 which is closer to E84 in height and size.

Drove a X2 loaner a few months back and it was a surprisingly pleasant car. Very decent handling and the visibility was not as bad as I thought it would be. Would not consider one for myself but I can see why someone would take the plunge for it or a X1 which should be roomier or at least more comfort oriented inside.
