Auto box Failure
So my wife bought her first BMW about 6 weeks ago an 7000mile 11 month old X1. xdrive, full leather, really nice spec etc etc. It's also her first auto car.
Last week a few days after she had given birth to our second child, hence the more practical car, I was dropping our older child to nursery and it and it jumped out of gear just driving down the road. I managed to nurse it to somewhere safe. I needed to be recovered to the local dealership. Pretty decent service from the emergency number sorting recovery and a hire care, all really slick. Timing of it could have be better but at least I was on paternity to be able to sort it. Turns out it needs a new gearbox, I've seen the parts list and it's £8.5k We are pretty chilled about the whole thing generally, although the service agent at the dealer has been hopeless and the service manager is now handling it for us. The gearbox is on backorder from Germany but hopefully won't be too long. Anyone had a gearbox fail on them? I realise we could have just been one of the unlucky few and that these things happen. I'll be moving over to the auto on my next car I think, I really enjoyed it. Before 'I' broke it! |

With regard to the auto box I would say you have been unlucky, the F48 has been around for approx 3 years now and gearbox failures are not on the list of common problems and certainly not on such a low mileage car. If the F48 had the same ZF auto box as the rest of the range, I would also say it is a long proven design with a very good reliability record however the F48 xdrive has a less impressive Aisin auto box so the jury may still be out. The Aisin box is the first 8 speed auto to be designed for use with transverse engines so it is relatively new and long term reliability is not known. I have had my xdrive auto or 16 months now and not a hint of a problem ( my mileage is however lower than yours), the auto better suits the engines and with advances in technology gives better performance and fuel economy in real world conditions. Do not be put off in making the move. Huge plus point, you get a new auto box under warranty. Last edited by MJE60; 04-09-2019 at 01:08 PM.. |

Thank you!
As for the car, yeah, we are not overly concerned, these things happen. Just hope we get it back sooner rather than later. Incidentally we have been loaned a 1 series, I have a 4GC which I have let my wife use so I've got the 1 for the time being. I actually really like it! |

Yes the Toyota Aisin auto box is superb I have the 2WD 1.8d it's silky smooth plus I understand it's GPS connected and anticipates hills n sharp bends to pre select the correct ratio, the only criticism is the mechanical shift I wish had the ZF style electric type as mu 3 series.
