Winter Tire Sizes for 18" 513M Wheels
Sounds like lots of you out there are planning on using the OEM 18"s with winter rubber. What sizes are you using or planning to use?
Standard staggered setup is 255/40/18 fronts and 275/40/18 on the rear... These are 9x18 and 10x18 wheels. The BMW winter wheel & tire package (based on 640M wheels) is recommending a square setup of 255/40/18, but the wheels are narrower. 8.5x18 for the front, and 9x18 for the rears. I guess I'm trying to decide if a square 255/40/18 setup could work on the 513M's with a 10 inch wide rear wheel, or if a staggered setup is really needed/required? Would love to know what others are planning to run on the OEM 18"s specifically. |

Recommendation from dealer here is to use the 255s as "max" at rear and also 255s as "min" in front. Thus -> wheels rather 640M than using the standard summer ones. 80% good info and Maybe 20% bmw marketing wanting to sell their wheels. But so far am happy with their previous recommendations. I should mention that we actually get snow here , elevation 1200-6000ft within 1 hr drive.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada and our winters are pretty mild. That said, I'm after a pretty solid winter setup to get me to/from our various ski resorts too. I'm thinking some good winter rubber on the 513M's should do the trick there, but am still stuck on the best tire size combo. Based on what I'm finding, I'm leaning towards Michelin Pilot Alpin 2's in 255/40/18 and 265/40/18, but would love to hear others choice and any more intel out there on best sizing for 18"s. |

For me its easier/more convenient to get The complete
Set vs just Rubber. Ah, Should mention i am in switzerland so Going to/through Ski resort Type areas is frequent. I Mostly Had conti Tires in The past an They Worked Fine on RWD 530d,535d in The Snow/sleet/etc. Including starting from standstill on an incline with Fresh Snow(and 535d has more torques than you can shake a stick at). Guess what i am saying is: no worry, The Tier 1 Brands Would be ok for me. If Michelin is Best deal for you over there, will work as well. Had Snow chains in my 5 series, but Never needed them I will know facts in 2 months when there's proper Snow Cheers |

I like the idea of a square setup in winter AND I don't want to run wider than a 255 rear tire in the winter on a ~3500 pound vehicle that may need to chew through some good snow.
Has anyone gotten pricing for a BMW winter setup? I'm interested in the BMW wheels but would prefer to go with some aftermarket tire options (i.e. maybe Nokian) |

So, 255/40/18's all around match the BMW spec for winter wheels (the OEM 640M's) but those are 8.5 inches and 9 inches wide. I'm still struggling to get any real intel on whether they will work well on 513M's which are 9 inches and 10 inches wide. Have you mounted a 255/40/18 on an 18x10 rear wheel? This is a good fit? Thanks... |

Anyone have insight into stretched rear winter tires and how traction will be effected relative to the front non-stretched tire? |

Also, I'm trying to decide between the LM60 and LM32. Wondering how much better the snow traction is on the LM60s. Any useful comparison tests out there?

Can only Tell You wha Dealer told me: 255/18 wont "work" (he didnt say dont fit) on The 10x18. And he would Not recommend to use Anything wider than 255s on The rear axle with this Car. Might be just marketing. I have The 18" as Standard and bought The 640m Set for Winter. Of course just Rubber would have Been cheaper (approx 4,5k in your money) but Having just signed for The Car i thought "ah well what The f". Sorry cant be of more help.

So Bridgestone Blizzak's LM-60's in 255/40/18 show a rim width range of 8.5 - 10.0", so Tire Rack and Bridgestone say they'll "fit". Using http://www.willtheyfit.com to compare the OEM size of 275/40/18 to the 255/40/18's, it looks to me like the 255 tire is going to stretch out slightly smaller, creating a 2.5% speedo error. Tough call here. Leaning towards the 255/40/18 x 4 Blizzak's vs the staggered 255/265 Michelin PA2 setup now. The $600 closeout price is pushing me that way too... |

Hello again, us being a few time zones apart makes this a bit difficult
I'd probably weigh the dealers (it was a service guy i know, not a salesman) recommendation of "not wider than 255" higher than all else especially if you're looking for a snow setup. Could you not try it out at your dealer ? Dont know about service levels in canada, but i guess i could do that here... Greets from the old continent |

I don't think the stretch is going to affect traction. Stretch tires are more of an issue with side to side movement (i.e. Taking corners at speed). 255 on a 10" tire is within the acceptable range. I won't be hooning around in the winter with winter tires, so performance takes a back seat. I'll save that for the summer.

If BMW recommends the 255/40 for the rear and summer ones are 275/40? so I will go with the 255/40 front and 265/40 rear - Michelin PA4. I did this tires on my 1M and I really like them! Dunlop wintersport 3d is good too.

Saw those, and have also pulled the trigger and ordered LM-60's in 255/40/18 square from Tire Rack to use with the 513M's. Seems like this will be a good solution...

I ordered 245/40/18 and 265/40/18 PA4 for my 513M set. I wanted 255/40/18 for front tires but 255's in PA4 weren't avaiable. I will give you a feedback.
